Default Scoped Nagant on Classic

I think the Scoped Mosin Nagant should have the 4x top mount scope as its default on Classic. I believe that scope was way more common than the 3.5x side mount scope. And besides that, it would balance out with the Scoped KAR. Plus: the top mounted x4 looks way cooler than the little tiny side mount

AFAIK 3.5x sidemount scopes were historically more common.

Best wishes,
Daniel.

The 3.5x PU was only just beginning to enter service during the battle of Stalingrad.

Turbolover is correct.

PEM was indeed way more common. Also the PEM scope was on a side mount 97% of the time in the war with only very small quantities being used in the older PE top mount as it is in the game..

The 4x scope came first, and was a copy of a German Zeiss model telescope. It was more expensive to produce and was quickly replaced with the 3.5x one of Soviet design. The 4x should be a rare and sought-for relic of the pre-war arsenel, not the standard model for new arrivals chosen for sharpshooting just a week before.

The side-mount PEM is the most correct scope. Both Zaytsev and Chekhov used it, along with virtually every other sniper operating within the city. The PU was only just entering service and was not commonly encountered in Stalingrad, and the version shown ingame is completely wrong anyway - it's a later 1943 type. Early PU rifles used the SVT scope.

The top-mount was used more often with the PE (not ingame, same as PEM but with adjustable focus by means of a knurled ring over the ocular end of the scope tube), and was commonly seen in the lead-up to Stalingrad. Every image of a sniper I have seen in Stalingrad is the side-mount PEM. I suspect that the rifles issued to snipers in the city may have come from the 1942 Izhevsk panic batch intended as a stopgap after the SVT's failure as a sniper rifle, but I have no way of confirming this.

The way the scopes all work ingame is miles off as well. The crosshairs shouldn't be centred at 100m and they move much more from 0-1300m; the PU's field of view is way too large as well. Then there's the stupid 'warping' distortion around the edges of every scope in the game, which is utter nonsense.

PE production was from 1932-1936, PEM production was from 1936-1940 and then another run in 1942. PU production began in 1942, mostly adapting SVT scopes to 91/30 rifles. The side-mount PEM is neither rare nor pre-war.

Maxim Passar, 1942 (fixed bayonet is presumably for heroic effect, photo is obviously posed - probably the only time he ever would have fixed it):

Zaytsev, winter 1942 in Stalingrad (he was issued a PU after being wounded in 1943 and returning to service):

Chekhov, in Stalingrad:

Find me a photo of a PU in Stalingrad and I'll be very impressed.

Ha! You're right. Now that I consciously search, every PU I can find in Stalingrad is mounted on an SVT. Every Mosinka has a PEM. Now I feel stupid.

(I consider anything Soviet made before June 1941 to be "pre-war" though.)

The reason they stopped production between 1940-42 is entirely due to the SVT. They thought it would be all things to all men, including a sniper rifle... when it turned out to have fairly serious stringing issues, that basically disqualified it as the new main sniper rifle, and the 91/30 PEM was rushed back into production while the engineers adapted the SVT's much smaller, cheaper scope to the 91/30. Post-1942, SVTs came from the factory with their sight rails milled off. The Germans ended up having a similar experience with their G43s... WWII semiautomatics just weren't suited to sniping. America persisted in using the M1C and M1D but neither was really even in the same ballpark as the bolt-actions.

Mosins in general aren't especially common down here, and cost nearly 4-5x what they do in the US. A friend of mine got extremely lucky and scored a 1938 Tula ex-PEM that the importer had failed to identify, but other than that I haven't seen any of the rifles or any scopes. I'm sure one or two are around, but even PUs are hard to find. I got an ex and bought a scope off eBay from a guy in Ukraine.
