Default That 'feeling'

I have recently been trying the BETA out for a few hours aswell as trying the original RO2. All I can say is that the Classic BETA have improved the game in generall. What I miss though is this certain feeling you get while playing OST. This 'excitement', 'fear' 'immersion'.. don't really know how to describe it. There is for sure a certain feeling in it. From close quarter combat to the feeling of an MG taking shots at you.

Is there any way to describe this feeling? What is the ingridients to improve it? What do you people think about it? What can be done? I can't, unfortunately, put the finger on what it is, but its something.

I have found this video below to showcase some of it.
Please watch through the whole video or at least a good amount of it.

Example from DH:

Showcase of a little bit bigger maps.

You may not realize it, but it is the zoom! Zoom kills the illusion of you being on a battlefield (not saying there aren't benefits to zoom as well).

Personally I feel it is not the physical zoom of the world, but the view scale of the weapons (guns were "bigger" in first person in RO1, if you understand that.) Additionally to this, something that still bothers me in RO2 is the difficulty with laying down while against walls and barriers; it frequently prevents it in RO2 while in RO1 it would be easy as pie to lay down. This was most obvious for me on Fallen Heroes when making the transition between the games, but obviously is a problem with any map in RO2.

I already get that feeling in the Classic mode and it was mostly absent in vanilla ROHOS. So I am rather happy for the most part.

The sounds in RO1 had quite alot of grain which I think gave it the gritty feeling. Also the choppy controls and the extreme recoil made it so the game wasn't just a matter of killing the enemy or capturing points, it was also about controlling the game, to be able to handle the weapons. RO1 was quite buggy and unpolished and that's what gave it character, because it was unpolished it had a gritty feeling. With games that have a bigger budget, including RO2, everything is too polished, too smooth.

It's the maps. Open maps. How many open maps do you have in ROHOS?

Check out this awesome custom map that might come out soon: http://forums.tripwireinteractive.co...&postcount=569

+ 1 , I can't really get it into words but 'gritty' might be one the major things that play a role, also the maps are important.

TWI needs to organise a mapping contest soon! I'd rather had that 10.000 dollar clan-prize result in something where the whole community could benefit from.

It's not only the maps. The smallest maps in RO OST plays out complete different from RO2.

And I'm not talking about the scale. I'm talking about how open the maps should be. On maps like Danzig, ROOST wasn't such a great game.

P.S. I didn't like Odessa either.

Zoom, sound engine, screen changing colour as you get suppressed, weapon twitches that don't really feel real or likely, lack of weather effects like rain and snow, not having control of what your character says (you are very limited in commands in RO2). The maps could be a little better too sometimes

The main thing may simply be our impression of the game overall from all the negativity around it. I really have to force myself to play the game now. When I do it can be fun but my enthusiasm for RO in general is pretty dented after having a long hiatus from RO1 and then coming to RO2 at launch

I think it's the sound, the maps and the suppression.

But mostly, I think it's the art style.

I agree with this, it had a certain style that no other game had. It was the opposite of smooth, it had a certain charm, the bugginess and unpolished style of RO1 had its own unique atmossphere.

I think its nostalgia...

And a touch of the weapons being more deadly at longer ranges. The new change that makes weapon damage scale down at range will help a LOT.
No more instant deaths from SMG spam 200m away

The feeling I get playing RO2 is completely different from DH/RO. Its just as brutal and scary, but the feeling is different. Don't know how to explain it...

As an experiment, y'all should unbind your zoom key and put IS zoom to 0. You'd be surprised how much of the RO1 feeling returns.
