No need to be sorry, chap! Remember there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.
Unless they're douchy passive-aggressive rhetorical questions, I guess. Ok, you win.

The only thing you would need to do is to mod it
For an open source game it's amazing... but as a game itself it's missing important control and playability features that RTS games had 10 years ago.

Considering he stopped working on it I assume he doesn't care about it that much.

Going in order starting with the ones I played first.

1.Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
2.Duke Nukem: Time to Kill (I was 7 or 8 years old when I had this and I lent it to my cousin, whos about a year younger than I, and my aunt broke it and threw it out because it was "too violent." )
3.GTA Vice City
4.Star Wars: Battlefront 2
5.GTA San Andreas
6.Delta Force Xtreme 2
7.Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45
8.Minecraft
9.Fallout 3
10.Star Wars: The Old Republic

Now in favoritism from greatest to least.

1.Delta Force Xtreme 2
2.Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45
3.Duke Nukem: Time to Kill
4.Star Wars: The Old Republic
5.Minecraft
6.Star Wars: Battlefront 2
7.GTA Vice City
8.Fallout 3
9.Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
10.GTA San Andreas

Its so hard to put one over another.
And for about 8 years now I have been on the hunt for another DN: Time to Kill.

1. Zelda OOT
2. Half Life + mods
3. FFVIII
4. Red Alert
5. Civilization 4 + mods
6. Close Combat 5 + mods
7. Rome: Total War + mods
8. IL2 Sturmovik + expansions
9. Battlefield 2 + mods
10. Resident Evil 4

No, Ostfront is not in the list. Although pretty good it just lacks those small features that could make it really great.

1. Rise of Nations
2. Age of Empires II
3. Wolfenstein series (From 3D to ET)
4. Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
5. World in Conflict
6. Bioshock
7. Red Orchestra
8. Medieval 2: Total War
9. Close Combat 3
10. Serious Sam

Victoria gets an honorary mention.

I suppose my votes here are a good example of the "what have you done for me recently" theory.

HL and HL2+ep1&2 are still 'worth playing' if you missed out on the past decade of gaming. There is no better modern equivalent that balances good story telling, gameplay, exploration and atmosphere so well.

For me the coolest part about the series is technically from when you start on the black mesa tram ride until the end of ep2 you are in control of every single thing gordon does. So the story really exists as an epic 12+ hour adventure if you were to do it all at once.

Yeah, Half-Life 2 was great. I mean, there's nothing like a story that assumes you know what the story already is and has characters around you refer to past events like they're an inside joke you're not a part of.

Yeah I guess some people might have a problem with the story not getting spoonfeeded to them. If you pay attention to details(as in to your surroundings, posters, what other people say), you get one of the best atmosphere / story there is in gaming. And Alyx is still my #1 companion in any video game yet.

The way to tell the story by the scenery, is something that Valve does incredibly well and sadly, few games try to do so, Portal and HL series are great in that regard, and Fallout 3 was very good too.

I liked Alyx in HL2, but she became very annoying in the episodes.

I never understood the fascination with Alyx.
I haven't played the episodes though, maybe they flesh her character out more there.

TBH I liked New Vegas better than 3. It just had a better atmosphere, Fallout 3 was way too brown and depressing for me.
