Default Any semi-realistic sci-fi game?

I know it sounds like an oxymoron but I'm a bit tired of same old weapons the whole time but I still enjoy the realistic aspects of games like RO. The movement, damage limit, ironsights, little HUD, etc. is all good but the weapons are starting to bore me. What I would like are weapons like in UT, quake or any other sci-fi game with the game mechanics similar to RO2 or any other realistic game. Can't seem to find one, I would prefer a fairly recent one which recieved positive reviews. It could be all the way I want it to be but if it's poorly made it's still a bad game.

Independence War II: The Edge of Chaos, Is a semi realistic space sim.

As for FPS, I'd love to see one, but i don't think there is any.

The thing is, weapons like in UT or Quake just don't make sense. They make sense for the games, of course, but for realism those slow projectiles just don't have a valuable application.

So a realistic sci-fi scenario is either going to have weird sci-fi looking but otherwise more or less normal weapons, or actual sci-fi weapons that, for example, can kill anything but specific DNA coded targets (i.e. you and your buddies) within a certain radius or something. Those would make sense then for a sci-fi setting, but they wouldn't make sense for a game.

So it's either one or the other, I would think.

The only game I could think of that would sort of fit your description is the Star Wars mod for UT2004: "Troopers: Dawn of Destiny". Heavy movement, weapons have a lot of kick, very sci-fi. HUD is fully customizable.
I don't think a lot of people are still playing it though.

Weapons like Mass Effect 2 seem cool and relatively normal.
In UT most weapons had fast moving particles like the ripper, the laser gun, etc. Ofcourse those weapons shouldn't act in a realistic game as they do in UT, you could have a laser weapon that takes long to charge but the laser is powerful and kills someone in one shot, no blas radius or anything. Rocket launchers wouldn't really fit though.
Star wars dawn of destiny was nice but it had some sharp edges, still had alot of HUD too.

if they gave neotokio mod more tactical shooter style weapons handling, you might have one of the best multiplayer games ever there.

The OP was asking for a semi realistic sci-fi game. Not an entirely unrealistic sci fi game.

To answer the original question, there are not many. I myself would like some somewhat realistic sci fi games.

Naumachia: Space Warfare looks amazing, though I doubt it will see the light of day. Looks rather realistic for a space flight simulator/game. Obviously very sci fi.

Freespace 2

For a shooter check out Interstellar Marines.

That Naumachia looks really cool I'll be keeping an eye on it thanks for posting. The visuals just look insane.

Man I wish I could fly around inside a nebula. Always been my dream .

Killzone 2 and 3 are the closest you can get. Every point you've described plus great graphics and singleplayer, but it's a console exclusive. There's also the very skillful and entertaining AI(best I've seen in any FPS), cover system, momentum in movement(especially in the second game).

It's WW2 in the future at it's core.

There's this one shooter, I forgot its name but it's on Steam. Basically has you fly around in space while your suit simulates the sounds you would hear if it wasn't for the vacuum. I think there were (relatively) conventional guns in it.

Blasphemy! Mass Effect is the IS-2 of sci fi games, doesn't matter how realistic it is

Fed has won the thread so handsomely that it seems pointless adding to it but i did want to point out a reason why i regret steam's dominance as a games delivery service.

Neotokio mod is an awesome piece of polished work that is based around, and i kid you not, one of the greatest gameplay concepts you could imagine in a team based P vs P game. It's brilliantly simple yet plays out in a way that creates involving team based tactics that get's the whole team working together in a way you just never see in other games.

But Neotokio has a problem - it's a source mod that essentially borrows Counter strike's random cone of fire shooting mechanics.
It also has a game-breaking problem with it's leaning (where you left lean and can shoot without exposing any target) which is said to be a source engine issue.

Now i don't know how realistic the mod planned to be with it's gunplay, however i think it would have felt better on unreal for example. I would include dystopia and eternal silence in that too as great thou they are they too fplay like scifi skinned counterstrike.

Although it's ease of use is commendable, I think source gets far more mods than it deserves by virtue of the exposure that steam's dominance grants it.
I wish Epic had launched an engine based delivery platform too, to at least provide an alternative and some competition.

Probably not realistic enough for your expectations, but still...
Battlefield 2142, the last real Battlefield.

Guns act like your everyday weapon, but vehicles are pretty awesome.

I forgot about Neotokyo, that mod was pretty good, does anyone still play it? Also played Dystopia and eternal silence, all good mods but still, they always felt like mods and not polished games. Also they weren't that realistic and I'm looking for laser weapons, not future weapons that shoot bullets.

I've looked at BF2142 gameplay videos, it looks allright but the same problem with the weapons and not that realistic.

While not featuring laser weapons, Shattered Horizon has a unique twist with it's zero graviry battlefields...
