I was playing a long suicidal game on Departed. Not too hard, but it does take a while to work through 10 waves with a full six member team. When it came time to prepare for the Patriarch, I asked if our team was going to us the good ol' "Everybody go bezerker, surround the Pat, and use chainsaws against him" strategy.
It didn't seem to resonate with the team, only because one squadmate stated that to use that strategy is cheating and takes away all the challenge of a game. Needless to say, we got decimated in a minute or two with the tactic of everyone being their own class. While I agree it takes most of the challenge away(I say most because there's still room for things to go wrong), I don't believe it's cheating. The tactic DOES work, requires everyone's participation, and it's not like the Pat's defenseless when your team surrounds him. But mostly, I was thinking of the amount of time the players put into the entire game to get to the boss wave. Nearly an hour everytime. Why should go through such lengths to get easily killed when it could be another suicidal/hoe map chalked on the board. So my question to the community is: Do you think using the Chainsaw Strategy is cheating the game? |

Nope, there aren't any rules as for how to play the game. It isn't cheating by any means of the word.
It's a bit lame though. |

it seems like the standard approach if ppl really need the map achievement, and although i have the maps i will play ball to help others out.
However i dislike it because it's no fun at all, and i really love the pat battles - win or lose it's my favourite part of the game and i prefer the 'cat-and-mouse' approach, particularly with interesting weapon combinations. |

Cheap doesn't mean cheating.
It's an effective and easy tactic, and that's precisely why some people don't like it. It de-fangs what should be the biggest threat in the game. Some people are masochists (like me) and want a real challenge. |

No, I wouldn't go so far as to call it cheating, but it is an exploit and it is pretty cheap.

Killing floor hipsters: chainsawed Patty before it was a common tactic.
Now, when everybody does it, it just doesn't feel that cool and offbeat anymore.

1. To counter the chainsaw rape, TWI added an AoE melee attack for the Patty where he attacks in an arc and is supposed to hit multiple players at once. However this doesnt seem to work properly if at all, so players can still get close as a group without getting squashed. 2. When Patty needs to heal, he falls down (crouches) repeatedly until he manages to escape, but since players are blocking him he just glitches and keeps performing the "Omg it hurts" animation, possibly doing a melee attack or two beetween which is not enough to kill the group before he dies. Sooo its very cheap way of killing him which a lot of HoE players find boring, which is not surprising since most of them are playing there for the challenge. Same. Im STILL missing some HoE achievements because even tho Id like to get them I refuse to do the chainsaw rape unless the whole team demands for it, so instead we end up fooling around and dying every time. So basically Ive beaten all maps on HoE but just havent killed the Patty in all of them lol (which is actually the easiest part if you really want to do it). |

I don't think it's cheating, just a lame way to win. This and the xbow/suicide exploit make game much easier than it should be. Whatever is this cheating or not, the weirdest thing is, that many updates passed, but no attempts made to fix them.

It's kind of lame and definitely gets old after 500 times, but I never really considered the Pat fight to be one of the highlights of the game so it's not like we're missing out on anything. To me the fun and exciting part of the game is getting through all of the waves, and I could care less about what happens after that.

Well, one defination of cheating in online games is "exploits which give players an unfair advantage in online multiplayer games"
And thats more or less whats going on in here with the chainsaw rape. Exploting game mechanics to get an unfair advantage (broken melee attack + glitchy healing) Last edited by HaTeMe; 09-05-2011 at 10:26 PM. |

It's a really cheap way to finish the game to me. I still need 2 HoE map achievements, but I don't chainsaw just to get them. Hell, you can do the same thing with axes. All surround and just hold down middle mouse button. If you want some real fun trying to surround, do 6 bullpups, 6 scars, 6 aa12s (easy, but fun to watch him bounce around when he dies in the middle of the gunfire), 6 flamethrowers, etc. There are TONS of these 6 of a perk/weapon combos that work. Hell, I'd venture to say that you could do it with any perk any weapon (save maybe knife or 9mm). Fang had a video a while back of 6 medics mp7ing patty.

Wow, I got downvoted for actually listing some different ways to kill patty? That's hilarious

If its not a cheat or exploit its really cheap and boring. It's almost become standard on pub games. People never used to do it. And they still won, heh, pretty much all my map achievements came before that tactic was common.

I'm not aware of any bugs involved in using this method, so as far as I know it isn't technically cheating. The AI does follow its instructions correctly; they just don't handle mobbings very well. Despite that, though, it is extremely cheesy, and I would much rather the AI were improved to prevent it.

I wouldnt call it cheating per se, it is just really cheap. my fav thing to do on suicidal and HoE for patty is xbow kiting which is alot more fun. The other thing ill do that is often fun is go medic and let him hit me on his head while i have chainsaw and just jump up and down on his head as a distraction so the other perks can hit him.

I think this article says a lot about this subject.
http://www.sirlin.net/articles/playi...in-part-1.html The author talks about a type of player he calls a scrub. A scrub doesn't play to win he plays to have fun. He sets up his own rules for the games he plays and calls certain tactics cheap and therefore avoids to use them even tho they are perfectly legal and allowed as far as the game is concerned. when he gets beaten by these tactics he claims that his opponent cheated. He sees these tactics as unsportsmanlike and therefore wrong. As my friend once told me A scrub doesnt play to win, he plays the gentleman's game. |
