Perhaps if someone had surround sound they would be able to tell, but a normal player can't. Hence the indicator saying "That bullet slammed into the wall on your left side".

Of course if it's telling you where the shooter is, I don't like it, as that is unrealistic.
Definitely, I don't mind a HIT indicator. Oh **** I just got shot in my stomach from a straight angled shot. I wonder where my killer was.

Oh I just had a bullet ricochet off of the wall next to me, the shooter must be at C3.

I think it's based on just the visual or audio of the shot, things someone would have no trouble determining.

It doesn't take much sense to figure out what direction the nearest loud bang came from. And even then the in-game marker is only approximate.

And you'd rather not immerse yourself further by figuring these things out yourself instead of having it rollercoastered for you?

I know what I'm talking about. When an AK47 is chipping away at the surrounding covering you're hiding yourself in, you have no idea where the shots are coming from. When you poke your headout for the milisecond before you take a 7.76mm round to your face, you have no idea where the shot rang from, unless you a.) saw the insurgent, b.) saw the muzzle flash from the hidden insurgent, c.) have amazing sound resonance detection (aka, you're a bat), or b.) were told by your battle that hajii is about a half click to your 1.

Sorry, you have NO IDEA what you're talking about.

if you really were an "expert" I don't think you would need to validate this claim with a bunch of people you have never met arguing over a small detail in a game that isn't released yet.

I dunno, maybe it's only included in the "relaxed" realism setting?

I'd prefer to have the senses I would have in reality. And since it's already been demonstrated that things like muzzle flashes can be missed more easily in a video game than in reality, the markers help bridge that gap.

Edit:

@3:20 When the two soldiers run to the window and one is sniped, the hit arrow pops up and shows exactly where the shot came from. Will there be an option in the 'realistic' game type server settings to disable this indicator? Searched and couldn't find a full list of things that can be disabled/enabled.
I also wanna point out that I originally thought the marker was showing a sniper in a window, too. If you look closely that's not the case, the marker is just showing there's a shot ahead of you. In the window directly across the street there were one or two German soldiers, one of which probably hit the first Soviet out the window, and even with the marker the player didn't know exactly where the shot came from.

Having served myself, I can only say that the indicator does not -> necessarily <- reflect a real life situation. The indicator makes it a lot easier to locate the enemy faster than you would in real life, especially if you're ambushed.

Also there are many variables that play in, such as what guns are being used , distance, rate of fire etc to determine the location of the incoming fire. Soldiers are usually well trained and figure it out pretty quickly but a red arrow pointing..

I've no issue at all with these kinda things as long as we can disable them server-side.

Not everyone has 3D surround sound.

Assuming RO2 even supports that.

Headphones are more than enough.

Bullets produce a fair bit of wake around them. If one passes close by you you'll probably be able to feel where it came from.

In real life you have 5 senses, you have two senses available in games. TW is just trying to make suitable visual and audio replacements for things you'd normally be able to sense.

Also, this is a peripheral indicator. Normally you'd be able to see movement or a muzzle flash in your peripheral, but a peripheral; once again, is not something that can be mimicked in game without an indicator.

Sorry, this isn't The Matrix, and there is no 'probably.' Combat has happened. We know these things for fact.

Also, peripherals can be mimicked in games just fine, it's just the cap on FoV in game is limiting. It's still 100% unrealistic no matter how your roll the dice.

For all of you arguing who have never even held a rifle...

Real combat would like to oppose all of your points:
‪Marine Firefight Afghanistan (VERY INTENSE!)‬‏ - YouTube

‪A Real-Life Firefight in Afghanistan‬‏ - YouTube

‪Actual Fire Fight-Khost Province of Afghanistan..wmv‬‏ - YouTube

Case in point, if you're disagreeing with me, you're clearly wrong - and have no IDEA what you're talking about.

On top of that, back to the topic. Will there be an option to disable this in SVAR? I suppose we'll have to wait and see at this point.

At this point.. I hope not. Just because it's inane and banal of you to argue so fervently over it.

So it doesn't matter that he's right or just wants it as a server option, as long as he doesn't get his way because he spanked you verbally over how wrong you were.

I guess we can't all be logical and reasonable people.

This blob might actually be a peripheral vision marker for a muzzle flash that You would see in real life, but You can't in video game because of it's specific limitations.

If so, it should stay even on realism servers imho.

Have more faith Guys, TWI has it all preety much figured out.

I already attempted to get this across but he has convinced himself that he knows best unfortunately.

I already tried to point this out as have others, but he has convinced himself that he knows best and everybody else is wrong, so I left him to it

Edit: If there is a dayglow arrow that indicates who shot you, then I'm with the OP and would like to be able to disable it
