Level Design 3D user interface like in Second Life ?

For your info: I'm a total beginner when it comes to the UDK, but I created some 3D content while I was active in the game "Second Life".

My question: I found the basic tools to build 3D content in Second Life very easy in use. You can create a simple box, then stretching it to desired size with some sort of XYZ-interface, and moving it in the 3D environment with the same XYZ-interface (+ turning it in all directions). To show you what I mean, here is a short video of how the interface works: <A href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zX6gvol-zIU&feature=related" target="_blank">

I hope someone here is familiar with that system and I was wondering if there is a 3D program around where I could build like in Second Life and then transfer my creation to the UDK for completing it (adding textures, etc.).

Is that possible ? If anyone could help me on track that would be awesome !

The 3dsmax texture shouldn't be used in a video game because, it doesn't work obviously and you are not allowed to use these from a legal point of view.

Learn uv'mapping then grab photo sources from http://www.cgtextures.com and edit those in with a 2D graphics program of your choice (gimp, photoshop), import the final texture, create a material in the material editor and apply the material to your mesh.

Read this:http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/MaterialsTutorial.html#Decal%20Material
This http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/CollisionTutorial.html
And this http://www.artbyjessemoody.com/ue3_tut1.html

This might be useful too

And no there is no easier way like you were hoping unless you want to produce crap and crap equals useless ;)

Have fun

Thank you very much for your reply. Your links are useful to me !

Regarding the textures: don't worry I'm not using protected content. Second Life is an online game where one can build his own content with own textures. So nothing fishy there.

I found a small tool to convert an .ASE file to a .T3D format (ASEtoT3Dtool). This makes it possible to export a 3DS Max creation with textures into the UDK because the T3D-format preserves the textures. The imported creation is not a static mesh but a brush. Going to experiment with it to see what possibility's are in it. Want to see how far I can go with such a brush in terms of applying materials and collission.

I'll report any useful progress here.
