Enjoying the game so far, but there are some weird framerate issues.
For example, being indoors actually decreases my framerate while outside i have better framerate. Also, I might be imagining things but somehow the game feels smoother when played in third person sometimes. But it's really annoying, it doesnt feel smooth to play at all though my pc should handle it fine. |

I caved in and bought it, after reading a good hour's worth of opinions from people. Seems more stable than any game they've ever made and it sounds like people are finding a lot to like about the streamlined systems.
Should I dive in on a harder difficulty setting than the default? Nothing depresses me more than a game I enjoy that's way too easy and makes me want to restart an hour or two in.

EDIT: Haven't messed with the difficulty yet, but there are actual settings and you can change them in options, so I imagine you could play around with it.

Right, so ~15 hours in now. My initial verdicts:
World: Best part of the whole game. A world as strange as Morrowind's, with a heavy dose of Norse mythology and aesthetics, and sprinkled with solid sound design, more interesting creatures, and better dungeons. Don't be fooled by the high mountains and valleys that make the individual areas feel smaller than Oblivion, the world as a whole is massive. I haven't left the starting few towns yet, and just looking at the map I haven't even scratched the surface. I haven't touched fast travel yet, as it kind of ruined Oblivion for me, and they give you options that let you get around without fast-travel (you can commission a horse and buggy, for example). Everything is leagues better than Oblivion's clunky worldbuilding (and I bloody loved Oblivion). Magic also brings back mundane utility spells that are pretty sweet. I found one that let me turn iron ore into silver and silver into gold. Basically a license to print money. Twas pretty awesome. Crafting also makes it's debut, and it's actually a lot of fun. I've hand-crafted all of my gear, and it's a great way to manufacture money. You can also beef up your current weapons and armor with a high craft skill. Enchanting makes it's return, and it's awesome. They've made it so your known enchants have nothing to do with known spells. Just knowing the spell isn't enough, you actually have to find a weapon with that enchantment and reverse-engineer it to learn how to bind the spell. This is running on a bit, so suffice to say I could fill several pages of forum posts with all the cool stuff I've found. Combat: Basically? Oblivion but a thousand times better. Better than the melee in Fallout or NV too. It feels visceral, violent, and powerful. The animations and sound effects really give the blows a real weight behind them, and there are some nice finisher animations that play from time to time that are unique to the style of weapon you use. Archery no longer sucks ***, and it only takes a 2-3 arrows to drop a tough opponent (it's much slower to balance things out. No more sprinting backwards and turning your enemy into a porcupine). Magic is a lot more fun to use now too. No more lobbing lame little balls at each other. The basic fire spell is essentially a flamethrower, the shock spell lets you charge it and arc lightning. Haven't toyed with ice yet. Also, playing rogues is finally viable, and throat-slitting and backstabbing is very rewarding. Also, shouts are WICKED fun to use. You can use them as often as you like, with a cooldown timer. More powerful shouts take a lot longer to cool down, and you can't use other shouts while another is cooling down. Story: Huge. Haven't even scratched the surface. Started the main quest, and JUST starting the Greycloaks questline. Don't want to comment on it yet. DRAGONS: ****ING AMAZING. RIDING THROUGH THE WILDERNESS. START GETTING ATTACKED BY BANDITS. JUMP OFF MY HORSE AND REALIZE THE BANDITS AREN'T ATTACKING ME ANYMORE. TURN AROUND JUST IN TIME OT WATCH MY HORSE GET CARRIED OFF. DRAGON STARTS STRAFING ME AND THE BANDITS. I'M RUNNING THROUGH THE RUINS DODGING DRAGON FIRE AND PICKING OFF BANDITS. FINALLY, JUST ME AND THE DRAGON. START TAKING POT-SHOTS AT IT WITH MY BOW. FINALLY FORCE IT TO LAND. CHARGE OUT OF THE FORT WITH MY AXE DRAWN. SINGLE COMBAT WITH A DRAGON. AFTER AN EPIC FIGHT, I FINALLY KILL IT AND ABSORB IT'S SOUL. +20 PENIS LENGTH. WAS SO ****ING BADASS. Uh, I think that covers everything so far. More as I discover it.

Funny thing: they keep directing people to the SkyrimPref.ini or something like that inside Steam/steamapps/common/skyrim/skyrim but changing any of the lines in there doesnt do a damn thing. What you are in fact looking for is your My Documents folder/My games/Skyrim, where you will find Skyrim.ini AND SkyrimPref.ini. By changing the lines in there you will actually change things. Now, for disabling Vsync i have read three things: you should add a line at the bottom of the Display section of SkyrimPref.ini called 'iPresentInterval=0'. Then i read there is already such a line present in that section, and after searching for it i found it. So, there is no need to add a second line, because it will do NOTHING. Just search for the line in the Display section and change the 1 to 0. The third thing i read about this is that in fact this line should not be added to SkyrimPref.ini at all, but to the Skyrim.ini itself, again at the bottom of the Display section. I have done this, but do not know if this is actually needed. Still, i added the line there and have found no problems running the game this way, so there should be little harm in doing so. After disabling Vsync i disabled mouse smoothing as well. Results: perfectly smooth gameplay experience so far, though i have yet to try it for a longer period of time. But with the little testing i have been able to do so far it seems i have completely eliminated any feeling of lag or low fps. I also set the Field of View to 90, and disabled floating quest markers and the compass. (who the hell thought it was a nice idea to add mammoths as a marker on the compass btw?) |

A great game. The only downside is the tweaking with the performance. But modders have already found tonnes of solutions for low framerates. |

A little weekend peak stats for Steam:
![]() Sunday will probably be around the same numbers for the peaks as well. Over 40K more for the peaks compared to yesterday in Putz's image.

I haven't been able to take on any dragons alone (with followers) yet.
The only one I've killed besides the first attacked while I was in Winterhold and the guards helped distract it so I could smash its face in. It wasn't a named dragon either. The other two unnamed dragons I've come across I had to run from on my horse because they would roast my *** from the sky even as a Breton with inherent magic defenses. And if that didn't work they would drop down and chomp me like the T-Rex from Jurassic Park. |

Anyone know if you need to DL anything with the PC physical copy in order to play? There is a local problem with my ISP and they don't know when it will be fixed so for now my internet is pretty much 56k.

I play on Adept and have killed 4 dragons (including the named one). Playing as a High Elf with all my perks in Destruction and Restoration. All I gotta do is find a good spot and use the terrain to my advantage and hide behind something when the dragon attacks. Then just pop out, fire off a couple of fireballs and rinse and repeat.

For those with regular CTD's, i found two other possible fixes.
One of them is turning off auto-saving and can be done in the game. Another one is using this little program on the TESV.exe: http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php I have been having a lot of CTD's today but after trying out those two things i seem to have eliminated the problem, as i havent been crashing for the rest of the evening. Hope it helps. |

I hadn't had any crashes for a solid 4 hours, but once I nudged my specs up to the high range, I got two within 20 mins of each other. So I'll have to try some of those fixes. The only thing I'm lacking is a top of the line video card but my current one is still well within min spec.
I'm fairly impressed with everything in the game, except the RPG mechanics. They've been completely watered down. Maybe some think this was for the better, but I don't. Leveling/growth becoming meaningless in Oblivion was a big reason why I eventually stopped playing it and I'm feeling like it will happen here too. I haven't gotten to any of the epic yet though. So far most fights have been easy and short. I also have to laugh at the pack of nordic chanters that follows me around. Stalking around in the dark I leveled up and it scared the **** out of me.
