Gigant worm!

I suppose everyone that has played the game knows this place. In the first temple (forgotten name of the area) in the cellar there is a round room with a big worm in the middle. I notice there is support balks around it I can knock on, probably to knock down the ceiling? But I just get chompt up by the beast when I try to pass. Help?
