Does anyone know why my mic doesn't register ingame when i depress my activate mic key(no needle movement on the scale), when it works fine in ts and windows sound recorder etc?

you sure you are using the correct button? try changing the key in the configuration

Sounds to me mate, that you have not joined a channel...

I shall take on board your suggestions and try them out again, but that won't be for another 7 hours or so.

So keep them suggestions coming, i was expecting the problem to me somewhat more technial as i've done what i feel the obvious solutions were, as per suggestions above
