I was looking through my steam tools list and noticed "Unreal Development Kit" and so I thought i'd install it.

The install was only a few MB so I wonder what it is. when I try to launch the tool I get the message "game is not currently available"

Has anyone else got this in their steam list and does it do anything on your machine.

I've got the UDK installed anyway - just wondered if it was to become a part of steam with automatic updates.

It's kind of a run-time version of UnrealEngine 3.
I.e. like UT3's editor but without UT3 but with all the cool advancements (e.g. light-mass) and bonus thingies (e.g. things like Scaleform) they implemented into their engine since then.

I suppose it's on steam because it's also the basis for a couple of games, like Prometheus and maybe one or more of those games are available through steam.
Kind of like you have to install Source SDK to play certain mods.
This is pure speculation on my part though.

I am going to make a game in Unreal 3 engine.

It was released for free to developers in late 2009, it is the whole unreal 3 engine.

I do not know the exact royalties that would be due for commerical release, I imagine there is some kind of agreement.

If anyone wants to join me to make a game, I am planning to spend 1-2 years for its development.

I believe the first $5000 you make is yours to keep, but anything after that you pay 25% royalties to Epic. It's on the UDK page somewhere.

Why it's in steam, I have no idea. I dont think any UDK mods/games are on there.
