Default SDK being wierd

I open the surface properties menu and its all ****ed up, I've tried restarting Steam, restarting my pc, and redownloading the SDK.

Yeah, it's a bit hit and miss and I'd rather not be constantly restarting the editor. It was just that this particular case was really stubborn and only fixed itself after a day :S

Well, it sometimes fixes ifself for about 10 minutes before reverting to this bull****, it also makes using the terrain tool impossible.

Yeah I have the same problem all the time. Restarting doesn't fix anything unfortunately. I have no idea when it "Began" but it's been around for a while. Haven't bothered me much since I'm mostly mapping to test things rather than to actually make maps. But still, it's almost impossible to texture things.

I've managed to find out where the buttons that I will need for texturing are now, but terrain is still impossible.

I don't have a solution for this issue but I feel your pain and felt the need to vent some mutual frustration for a few issues of my own with the editor.

For some reason if I have not built lights for a while using the editor will make my monitor brighter, including every other program I am running. I can click out of editor and it will return to normal but when I go back to it everything brightens. Very strange and very frustrating when I'm watching a movie while making a map. Or just want to know what the colors in game actually look like.

Another one is the old undo feature, which is cursed. You can click undo 75x to undo one thing you've done and sometimes the editor will just wag a finger in your face and crash on you if it doesn't like it.

When you delete a terrain it doesn't get deleted from your list until you've restarted SDK, so if you accidentally click the deleted terrain in your list it will hard crash everything.

One time I could not locate my texture/static/sound/etc window anywhere. I restarted, reinstalled, all sorts of crap. Spent about an hour trying to solve only to have it randomly come back to me and I never found out why.

Hope you figure your issues with it out.

You can solve the light-problem very easy by just setting your light settings to default ingame (I think default should do however). Anyway the light depends on your ingame light settings. As for your other problems I either don't know any solution or haven't noticed them. =)

If the above link doesn't help, it's something else.
If the brightness is different in UnrealEd than it is ingame it could be due to either KFColorCorrection, which is only active ingame, not in UnrealEd or UnrealEd has manually been set to different settings. Open the game and jot down the values for brightness, contrast and gamma. Then open UnrealEd and type the following into the console at the bottom:
BRIGHTNESS #
CONTRAST #
GAMMA #
"#" being the respective value ingame.

None of the should be affected by your rebuilding habits.

I don't know what player you are using for your movies, but the VLC player a) is affected by the graphics card's driver's video options, not the desktop brightness so it is unaffected by UnrealEd's antics and b) if it isn't it has its own brightness/contrast/etc. settings so you can adjust it easily.
