Default Winners of Wave 1 Grindhouse Custom Map Contest

With over 50 entries for the contest, we have been really impressed with the quality of many of the submissions. The best of the best was judged to be Damien Laurent’s “KF-Waterworks”, which wins the top prize of $5,000. With amazing visuals and impressive gameplay the map set the bar very high for Wave 1, and will be one to watch for Wave 2. With all the great maps submitted in Wave 1, we can’t wait to see what the mapping community creates for the final wave where the grand prize is $10,000. Additionally, the Wave 2 deadline has been moved back to October 2nd, 2009 to give the mappers a little extra time to polish their entries.

Congratulations to all the entrants in Wave 1. It is clear that a lot of effort went into these maps and it is just a shame that we can’t reward everyone. The top 3 maps from Wave 1 are:
  1. First Place - KF-WaterworksV2 by Damien “DamDam” Laurent which wins the $5,000 prize.
  2. Second Place - KF-FilthsCross-v5 by Justyn “JustFilth” Toohill – Nvidia GTX 275 (896MB) graphics card plus a Logitech G19 Keyboard and G9X Mouse
  3. Third Place - KF-CornerMarket_v3 by Clement Menendez – 2 Nvidia GTX 9600 GSO graphics cards
Here is the full list of runners-up, with a special mention for Justyn “JustFilth” Toohill who succeeded in producing 3 of the prize-winning maps!
  • KF-Biohazard-XTX by Justyn “JustFilth” Toohill – Logitech G15 Keyboard
  • KF-Refugev2 by Andrew “IrritAnt” Orman – Logitech G15 Keyboard
  • KF-Hospital-V3 by Justyn “JustFilth” Toohill – Logitech G9x Mouse
  • KF-DegenerationSPV2C by James “KiCk3R” Lovegrove – Logitech G19 Keyboard
  • KF-Swamp by Michael “Kyben” Hewish and Corey “Maul” Sine – Logitech G9X Mouse
  • KF-MountainPass_Beta1 by Kevin “DrGuppy” Butt – Logitech G9X Mouse
The screenshots are on the front page!

That's great, thanks a lot to Tripwire and congratulations to the winners and runners-up. I'm glad to see that the selection makes much sense. All the maps mentioned were impressive, especially given the time restriction.

Congratulations to all the winners and runner-ups.

I especially love playing KF-MountainPass_Beta1. Reminds me of driving up to Summit County.

Lolz.

Mine and Kyben's nicknames were switched. That's odd. I wonder how that happened. According to your news post. I AM KYBEN.
Jeezuz, wouldn't that be a twist.

Turns out I'm not, I have not even played Black Sierra yet. But I digress.
Congrats to all. Me and Corey now have a battle to the death over the mouse.

Waterworks did deserve high rankings. I knew Swamp was fairly simplistic in Gameplay, (run around finding lights) and has many exploits and bugs, so I didn't have high hopes for it in this wave. I'm in the process of revisiting the map, testing and honing it up for wave 2. Kyben and I are busy. New map. Wave 2.
Bring it.

Good job guys. Some real quality maps were given the recognition they deserve. In addition, a host of server Admin have plenty to keep the punters happy.

Congrats to the winners, runner-ups, judges who had to deal with the hard decisions (well, except for the winning entry ) and the remaining contest entrants.
I personally think FilthCross is a very worthy choice. In my humble opinion, it has the best game flow of all the contest maps. We had a blast playing it

Cheers!

Well done all. All those maps have undoubtedly improved the KF experience and longetivity of the game.

Bring on Wave 2.

(P.S. it's nice to see Corner Market getting the recognition it deserves)

And I've never even seen Swamp so that's one for me to go and have a look at.

LOL... I did wonder. We forgot to ask for people's nicks on the entry form, so I had to guess the pairings of real names to nicks. I had to go and get one of them wrong!

Does TWI plan to offer their critiques and reasoning as to why certain maps did or did not win? I thought the purpose of pushing back the wave 2 deadline was to allow the map authors to take in the "feedback" from the wave 1 results, but I only see about one vague sentence dedicated solely to WaterWorks. Although it's nice to have the list of winners, it doesn't explain why they won, thus merely leaving everyone to make their own assumptions.

In particular, I'm curious to know how DegenerationSPV2C made it in as a runner-up seeing as the map is the virtual antithesis of what the rules required, namely that it's singleplayer-only, doesn't have any traders, only uses scripted specimen spawns instead of the typical wave gameplay, makes liberal use of unexplained and invisible player blocking walls, is incredibly buggy (cut scenes break the HUD, killing specimens causes split-second freezes, the ladder), and so on.
