If devs start hosting files or say put things available through steam. They have certain copyright issues. Thats why they cannot easily start a custom map website or a free redirect.

Or someone could say, "Yes, we've already got these packaged up for immediate download, come and get it," such as KillingFloorMods, who would be in an ideal position to be a clearing house and this would be a fine place for them to say so.
See how easy that is?

Nice work TWI
Is there a way to tell, in-game, if a map is on the whitelist (such as typing a console command or something)? Thanks in advance

I suspect you're already doing this internally, but I think it would be tremendously useful to also post the md5 hash of the whitelisted maps, to prevent version mismatch, ambiguity, etc. across servers, player downloads, and mod sites.

Stupid question... Does the file name have to stay identical?
I renamed KF-TrailOfTheWoodsFINAL.rom to remove the word 'FINAL', when I copied it onto my server (ie 'KF-TrailOfTheWoods.rom' So, I guess the whitelist would have to use something embedded in the file, but will the filename also affect it? Last edited by SpurryMoses; 07-02-2009 at 11:36 PM. |

You can not rename the file and have it still work. In general, it is best to leave every map named the way the download gave it to you, so that players do not end up redownloading the map when connecting to someone else's server with the original file name. But now you have extra incentive, to keep the Map White List compatible =)

Argh thats a pain in the arse.
Surely the white list checks more than just the filename ?? Other wise there will be tonnes of levelling maps still - just renamed to white listed maps. And if you are looking at more than the filename to work out if a map is white listed, why the hell does the filename need to be fixed ? Shame you couldnt come out with this infor prior to disabling perks on a large number of servers running whitelisted maps (just without the retarded FINAL plasted all over the end)..... We do check more than the map's name to see if it's white listed, otherwise we'd obviously end up with leveling maps just being renamed. We have to check against the file name, though, for extra security.
As I said, it's generally a bad idea to rename maps anyways, otherwise players end up with 10 different copies of the same map. |

So what happens when they update their maps? Final doesn't always mean "final", after all.

A suggestion regarding the whitelist though, if I may suggest:
It would be nice to see a small symbol in the maplist in front of the map name if the map is whitelisted. This would help choosing maps which to play on immensely. Respectively, for online games, it would be great if the server select screen would have 3 symbols: 1) All whitelisted 2) Mix of whitelisted / non-whitelisted maps 3) All non-whitelisted maps This would allow us to pick the server which best suits our needs. |

They must resubmit them and get the new map white listed.

Come on guys. When you release a custom map use version control and name your maps intelligently and logically. Its a right king shambles at the moment.

Yeah you look at the maps alright!!! The word builder come in mind.
You have to do better than that. I thought you were doing away with builder maps. kf-firing-range-b4.rom kf-toomuch.rom Last edited by snowman38843; 07-03-2009 at 06:44 PM. |

Maintaining a white list seems like a big waste of developers time IMO. I would rather see updates

"As I said, it's generally a bad idea to rename maps anyways, otherwise players end up with 10 different copies of the same map" This was my approach with my first release, I only updated the actual archive name to reflect the version number and left the .rom name the same on all versions so the redirect did the job of updating any client with a different .rom to the server. However I did recieve a number of complaints about this method as it seems people using services like gameservers redirect can not actually manually update there redirect and this in turn was basically creating a mismatch error for these servers. I hate the process of having to rename maps on updates. I make a map say KF-mapname and loath the fact of having to put either v1 v2 v3 final beta attached to the end of it as renaming the archive should surfice. Only solution I have come up with is to skip the all public beta line and put in a request for private testers then I could call the map anything i wish before a final release. So maybe a list of clans, groups willing to be party to doing private betas would be a good idea. Cheers JustFilth. Last edited by JustFilth; 07-04-2009 at 05:21 AM. |

I think the map naming is really bad to begin with, there should NEVER be a KF-Map-Final.
Why not just do KF-Map-1.3, KF-Map-1.4. This way you always know you have the same version and it allows for fixes to 'final' versions of maps. There is a good reason why software developers don't put FINAL in their version numbers... I don't see why maps should be any different. |

This list is going to be updated as more maps are white listed correct?
