From Wikipedia's Steam entry:

Quote:
Server Downtime and Power-OutagesOn December 15, 2005 the main Steam content-delivery servers were sent offline after heavy storms and flooding in North West America, causing widespread power-outs and flooding. Many users were angry that Steam had no backup of the servers, or another way of keeping them online. This problem meant that customers could not log into their Steam accounts, let alone play any games. This problem has still not been rectified, and in a statement, Steam said that they do not know when the servers will be back online and fully functional.
Exactly one year later, on December 15, 2006 there was a wide spread power outage in Bellevue / Seattle caused by storms and high winds impacting Steam Server availability. This message on Wikipedia is the only message that some people have been able to find about the problem, further angering many Steam users. The forums and support system for Steam are down, and there is no way to access the network status at www.steampowered.com/status.

So umm... who wants to play paper football? Rock-paper-scissors maybe?

I am surprised that Valve does not have a Propane, Onan 60-150kw GenSet. That's all it would take to become RELIABLE! After all, they handle Internent Traffic from all over the world.

Far too many users, developers and publishers are dependent upon Valve's reliability. It would be a wise and prudent decision to ensure this sort of thing never happens again. There is absolutely no excuse for not having an emergency power backup.

Any issues you are experiencing with connecting to Steam are only temporary, as this isn't an end-user issue.

What the hell!! Didn't they learn from the past? The same thing happened in New Orleans when the GOVT put all the refineries in one spot.. dumb bastards!!!

Hell, I have a generator here at my house that is available for back-up power!!!. Hey steam, since you are global, HAVE A FREAKIN BACK UP PLAN instead of sipping on fuu-fuu drinks with umbrellas sticking out of them!

Hopefully this is due to that storm too...
