The consistency you speak of doesn't really matter in my humble opinion - after all it's over a 10 yr period and all the kids wouldn't get a PS the day it was released. Also you have more kids getting other means of playing games as well, Xbox, PC, Nintendo and so forth. All in all that would merit a steady drop as opposed to a sharp one for each marked event. Anyway, the first chart was just an example of a possible explanation. Of course you have to count in other factors as well, such as the aforementioned drop in birth rates, but the fact still remains that the violence IS at an all time low and that more and more kids play games. It sure isn't on the rise like many politicians want you to believe. As it is now the media goes berserk if a crazy guy killed another person... and he owned a copy of GTA. "GTA taught crazed killer how to kill" and so forth. Bah. WTB more skills in english, I don't know how to say what I want to say :P

All I know is this:
I've played driving sims and I've driven real cars. I've played flying sims and I've flown real planes. I've played war games, and have fired a few guns, but never in combat. Games may help when it comes to the rote memorization of what you should do when, but no game can prepare you for the experience of the real thing. For example, I've done hundreds of engine-out landings in flight sims with not a care in the world. But a month or two ago, I was flying an old Cessna when the engine speed suddenly dropped about 700 rpm. Now, all it was was that the throttle slipped out, but my heart jumped in to my throat for a moment just the same. The game may accelerate the learning process just a bit, but you still wouldn't feel prepared if you were suddenly called upon to fight in a real war without any additional training. |

We played those war games too. But now kids have these modern games. They don't want to go in to forest anymore, becouse it is so much more fun to play with computers and consoles. Although some kids still like to play in forest, though a bit more modern games like paint ball.
I guess those forest games teached some survival skills and computer games are teaching only theoretics. You know what you should do when under fire. But reality is completely different thing. You never know what is going to happen. Your weapon jams, what you are going to do, no game teaches that. Your buddy is wounded and you have to carry him away. You accidentally shoot civilians or friendlies and got blamed forever. What ever can happen in real war, no game or even military training can teach you that. Maybe general crime rate is hopefully decreasing but then there are those highly disturbed persons also who are playing games. Playing games works both ways for good and for bad. |

I would agree that playing FPS games does contribute to faster reactions and general situational awareness. Just think how fast your brain is ticking over and making decisions as you play RO, it all contributes to a sort of 'mental workout'.
That doesn't mean playing a game makes you a super soldier, but a lot of armed forces around the world are cottoning on to the fact that it speeds up reaction times.

The *only* part of real world combat that equates to video games is reaction time and target identification (like about four people above have said :P)
I'd hate to see an army made up entirely of video gamers though. All the BF2 players would be trying to jump up and down to prone like they were doing air-raid drills, the CS players would always be staring down their scopes, the Rainbow Six players would be prefiring around every corner, and the RO players would all be prone in the back with an eye sticking over a rock wondering why they can't shoot anyone.

i believe playing strategic realistic wargames can give you an advantage in RL, it won't make you a rambo but it can be IMO at least as helpfull as military training if not more... the only dis-advantage could be... that you are a fatass

The same as chess it's not that much about millitary strategy but more the ability to make logical decisions.

Sounds stupid, doesn´t it? It works like this: Normally, you draw roomtaking moves on a scetch with a big fat permanent marker and explain where the soldiers have to go when they want to storm a room by painting colored arrows on that scetch. Now, you could tell them the same by doing it in Doom 1 instead of painting that stupid scetch, which is what has been done. The only problem is, that the media will be all over it and tell you, or any other civilian who is easy to impress, that the army uses Doom 1 to train their soldiers and what happens? These people will think that Doom 1 is a ultra realistic killing simulator although everyone and their grandma could tell them that the game has nothing to do with real wars. Besides, you don´t even know what they train their soldiers when they make them play a game. They could let them play UT2004 or Dance Dance Revolution to get them better reflexes or they could let them play Baldur´s Gate 2 to get them to read more. Pass this info on to someone who doesn´t know too much about these games and he will think: Wow, if the army uses it to convert its soldiers to mindless killing machines then it must be pretty bad...

Among doctors with robotic surgery, they are noticing that ex gamer doctors, have much better eye robot coordination oppesed to ex book worm doctors. I have avoided collisons with braking techniquies and reflexes that I learned/built up with realistik (F1GP Toca 3, GTR 2 Not NFS underground and poo like that) racing simulators. I have trained with a flight simulator back when I used to fly to get me ready, and I was pretty good as a result. So gaming has a lot of benefits. And then there was a time when I saw roofers on top of a corporate building, with the sun setting behind them, and with too much bf2, and lack of sleep, my first tought was, OMG SNIPERZ, and i looked around the parking lot to see good cover. Then my next tought was, that I have to lay off the fps a little.

Uh, show me where Doom isn't realistic? Is it the recoil on the BFG that's a bit off or what?

i know that the usa army uses or used the rts game CLOSE COMBAT SERIES, (wich is IMO the best RTS game ever made) to train their officers. they found that making their officer recruits play that game against each other, is better than a 1000 hours of theory lessons. it is an extremely strategic and addictive game, it took me 3 years to know the game and beat top players.
that game really teaches you the importance of unit placement, strategy and how to use all the military tactics to their best like: suppressing fire, smoke, ambush, flanking... i wish they would combine this RTS with a FPS, so that all those little soldiers on the screen would be real players obeing your orders... would be the best game ever |
