As for pure tanking maps. Again, what is the point of a lighter tank? The panzer 3 greatly struggled against the T34, so much that it was quite anaemic. The T70 isn't going to fair any better against the long barrel panzer 4. So really it won't add any new level to tank battles. It will be the same tanks we have now exchanging fire, with the lighter tanks exchanging fire with one another and otherwise running away. Instead, they should have added something heavy enough to mix it with the current tanks, while adding some variety. Like a KV1 and a Stug 3.

German tank commanders were armed with sub-machine guns, being able to shot from the open hatch would help combat AT'ers, albiet at a risk of being shot as well... being killed and respawning as another crew member could remove the option.
I agree, IMO light tanks don't add to the mix, the Tiger & KV-1 are excellent choices, though I'm partial to the Panther and T-34/85.

Anyway: I didn’t realize that TWI was going to add two new tanks before or without adding Troop transports such as trucks or APC vehicles such as Halftracks. If this is the plan, then we need to start demanding that infantry be able or allowed to mount and ride the tanks!!! A bunch of WW2 FPS games already do this. Hell, the Darkest Hour mod team figured it out for that RO1 mod… you can’t tell me TWI can’t figure it out as well. |

T-70 is much more interesting, since it has a different and quick-firing gun, it is very small (and it was prized for how difficult it was to detect sometimes, and also how it could creep into places where bigger tanks couldn't, like narrow streets), manoeuvrable, and it also has enough armour to withstand AT rifle fire (frontal armour, at least). They were also quite numerous at the time of the Battle of Stalingrad, when a standard tank regiment would have a batallion (i.e. 1/3, usually) of T-70 tanks. Plus it is one of the undeservedly overlooked AFVs of the period, and RO2 would be pretty unique to have it (even WoT doesn't have it yet). What concerns me is how it will be balanced against German tanks: even if Pz 3 is introduced, it belongs to a different class, being heavier and having more armour, while all German light tanks were obsolete by the time T-70 appeared, and completely outmatched by it (not to mention the fact that their numbers dropped precipitously with Barbarossa and later). Perhaps it would work well in asymmetrical maps (like the much-applauded Bridges of Druzhina), where Axis don't have any tanks. Last edited by Grenator; 08-08-2012 at 08:23 PM. |

The tanks don't need to be balanced. Armor in World War Two was never a mirror match-up in real life, and I see little reason why it should be counterpart-for-counterpart in-game.
So let's throw in the Panzer III and T-70, followed by some troop carriers, followed by perhaps a KV-1 and a StuG III. As long as something in-game can kill it, there's no need for per-unit balance. Obviously, being able to manipulate vehicle respawns more than we currently can would be a powerful balancing tool as well, as we could set, say, a powerful tank like the KV-1 to respawn only every three minutes, rewarding a German team more for its destruction.

I'm looking forward to the new tanks, although decreasingly so as time goes by. I haven't played RO2 in a few months and I doubt I'll bother to re-install until we get a content update.
Do people think the new tanks will require new maps, or they'll just be used in place of the current medium tanks on existing maps? It would be nice to have at least one big official tank map akin to some of the larger/better DH ones. RO2 is a very high-quality game as of the GOTY update, but TWI are depressingly slow at adding new content. I understand that it is linked to the new engine and server stuff (which I don't claim to understand, but I know is more complicated than previous Unreal incarnations) but it's still frustrating that we've still had absolutely no word on this after what feels like a year or two. well if balance does not count the allies should get the KV-1 it
was used in mass numbers not like the t 70 but oh wait that would unbalance the maps so the german players would yell |

KV-1: 5219 (this includes all varieties, including KV-1s, which wasn't out yet, and pre-war tanks, which were mostly quickly lost). T-70: 8226 (about 5000 of them built in 1942). (ahem) |

The Germans could always get a captured KV-1 (Pz KV-1A 753 (r)) if balancing becomes an issue. They could even re-equip it with the Pz IV G's 75mm cannon.

Or use pistol ports |
