Chin straps, German Helmet

They are probably not there for the same reason there aren't any slings on the guns: The polygon-budget.

This is usually the sort of stuff that gets left out to stay within budget, but still insure the overall quality of the models, you have to trim the fat somewhere..

This is 2011, man.

"Trimming the fat" would make sense if it was something that could actually bog you down. It's not like they would have to fully model every individual notch in the leather, or even the buckles themselves.

Makes no difference, there's still a poly-budget, the budget has just gotten bigger.. only, so has expectations, so you need to spend a lot more of that budget on the fundamentals than you did previously, and nobody will accept a high quality model, with minor bits hanging off of it that are clearly no where near the standard of the rest of the model.

Eventually we'll probably reach poly-budgets where such issues pretty much go away, but we're definately not there yet, and current gen games still have to trim the fat.

No way, a reasonably detailed (bendable without sharp corners) rifle sling would require like 200 triangles- with 10-15,000 triangles for highest LOD, the reason for not having slings must be something else.

I hate clueless people who just go around saying how current generation of games can handle X or Y !

If current games have to trim fat somewhere, it is usually on complicated materials. When I was working on ArmA2, polycount was pretty much non-issue, while GPU load from computing material effects of the model was constantly watched.

If polys are a problem, they should just put the strap at the front of the helmet like this.
