Any time I join a friend's game through steam, or he joins my game (meaning he clicks "join game" through the friends list, since the in game friends server tab is apparently completely unworking, that's about the only way to join the same server as someone), the person joining is forced to download the map, even if it's one of the stock maps that comes with the game, like farm, and it downloads at about 1kb per second, so after about 10 minutes of trying to download farm, it's at like 20% and the server disconnects.
Any way to fix this? We've both verified the game cache multiple times, and both have uninstalled and reinstalled the game. edit: ok, little more info I can find servers in the internet tab like normal, and join them with no problem, it's only when I try to join the same server as my friend if I add the server to favorites via the ip, it still does it if I type open *server ip* in the console, it still does it sometimes it doesn't download the map, sometimes it downloads a ~30mb file called kf_gore_trip_sm Last edited by Phrewt; 07-20-2012 at 08:02 PM. |

make sure that his game patch version is as same as yours first.

that means either the server isn't updated yet or your friend has outdated files

you other guys I appreciate the replies, but we've both uninstalled and reinstalled the game and verified the game files a couple times, we have the most up to date version, each of us can join just a random server and play on it fine without any issue, but if we try to join each other it does this

Is this a listen or dedicated server? If you are renting a server or running one yourself, make sure you are not using Hlds Update Tool to update the server. TWI recently changed to the SteamCMD method and Hlds no longer distributes the latest updates.

I assume they're dedicated, one of us will just find a normal/long server in the internet tab with good ping and no more than 2 people already on it

My fault, read it wrong and thought you were hosting one. The only reason I can think that it would do that is if the client doesn't have the same files versions as the server or the other way around.

Can you both join the same server manually?

no matter what we do or how we filter the internet tab, we can't find the same server in that list, like we're in a different region or something
the most "manual" way I've tried is clicking "game info" in the friends list, getting the ip from there, then typing open and that ip in console, but it still does it |

Try changing download locations and verify again. The only reason any of this (sending files, getting different server lists) will ever happen is because of version differences.

I didn't think it was even possible to have different versions in Steam. It forces you to download updates before you can play the game.. but yes that is the problem here.

To have one region delivering a different version of the game than everywhere else would indicate their download servers didn't properly sync. It's rare but it happens and it gets fixed. The immediate solution on the client would be to try a different download location.
