Map of the Week (+Reviews)

Timur's Map of the Week and Whitelisting Reviews: Finding Samarkand

After some thought and talk to the whitelisting team, I have decided to do a "Map of the Week"; where I search (or have others point me to;)) very awesome, out of the way maps. This thread is for finding that desert rose ( or "Samarkand"..but that has reference to my name, and you likely won't get it, so just go with desert rose), that perfect map for you or your server. This will let you find nice maps without having to scum through the entire whitelist. Hurrah! And it's updated weekly, so if I don't have what you need now, either ask in comments, or simply wait for next weeks entry.

I will avoid the really well publicized maps, and, for now, go about looking for some nice ones that aren't always as commonly found as "Doom2" or well known as "Candlesmoke" or "RE2-Mansion Story". Also, for the sake of convenience, I will include links to more sources if you aren't so sure, and links to downloads, if you are so sure. In the future, I plan on perhaps throwing in a few Muts, perhaps trying out video, or even bug people sarcastically enough to get an animated dolphin;). But, for now, I have set my sights on a pretty few maps, and am doing further research; for now, at least, it seems like I will have more than enough diamonds in the rough for everyone.

Here are the exact "map of the week/review" posts, for those who want quick access:

Review #1: HarbourV3

I found this one by chance, suggested by a friend (actually, the same who suggested I make this thread), and I must say, it is excellent.

Map Basics: Size: Medium
Difficulty: Moderate (be warned, I rarely post "easy maps" here)

Visuals: This is a very stunning map, visually and game-wise. I love the different "settings" of each part, the mood of each area, which is so varied and beautiful, and yet it fits together so smoothly. When the gorgeous Mediterranean style is lighted by the golden sunset, it actually makes the zombie doomsday even more dramatic. The dank, foggy and eerie sublevels and sewers have their own style that still fits in with the rest; quite a treat, even on lower settings (higher settings make it even more stunning, but are not necessary)

Gameplay: This is a well designed map. Seriously, it is. It is moderately difficult, with few obvious "camp here" spots, but a number of (very dramatic) well varied spots throughout the map to suit your team. It is far from monotonous, and the varied shapes of specific rooms or areas makes each spot unique. Truly a fun experience.

More Screens:
Spoiler!

Verdict: Very good. Worth downloading, for sure. Great for team or solo play. Just greeeat:IS2:

okay, I hate to triple post, but to those interested, I have many screens that are much better than my own, provided by Olivier. I may begin switching my own pics out with these, as I clearly have HUD, and settings on low :p so I hardly do the map justice.

Spoiler!

Enjoy

Check out :

KF-Swamp
KF-Grimpen
KF-Grevona
KF-Marlyx

I'll add those to my list:cool:

In any case, if I could pick some volunteers; I would like to see if I could find a server and a team willing to test these with me. It's not 100% necessary, as I can judge spots and areas if I have enough zeds in solo, but it would certainly make things easier and provide alternate feedback:D

Well, next week is coming up fast, and so far I have two maps (both of which have been tested and enjoyed) to choose from and so far 1 volunteer tester and no server. I could probably pull it off, but it's not as developed as I would have wanted. In any case, I'll try and see if I can get someone who has decent graphics to take more "cinematic" pictures (like Olivier did for Harbour) of whatever map I choose.

But the show will go on no matter what:D

Map Basics:
Size: It feels like a Medium Map often times, but leans more towards Large
Difficulty: Moderate

Atmosphere, Visuals, and Sound: Notice I said more than visuals here, because this map's charms are not just in the visuals; its a combination of effects, visuals, and custom-made music. This map seriously creeped me out; scrambling through the cellars, the labs, the upstairs; this map manages to not only refrain from being monotonous, but manages to be extremely creepy in every section. Even after testing this map from Day 1, it still is unsettling, and to me that is the biggest draw. Too many maps forget atmosphere, but this is not one of them. Also, when playing, make absolute sure to have that music on!

Odd fact you should know: Your experience in the lower levels is basically decided on your graphics. Low and below will lead to you only seeing sillhouettes, which has pros and cons. Medium and above allow for lighting effects in those levels...just take a look.

Spoiler!

Gameplay: This map also manages to backup its eerieness with good gameplay. There are very few easy camping spots, and you must always keep an eye above, below, and to all sides. The experience goes very well with the above mood, which really makes it feel coherent, instead of just jumbled together.

Negatives: There must be negatives to every map, and this one is no exception. While I recommend it, I did notice that the spawning and pathing lead to stuck zeds refusing to suicide when I played solo, so keep that in mind. However, this is negligible usually, so no reason not to play.

Spoiler!

Verdict: Those who want an eerie map with good gameplay, look into this.

Lol this is related to KF-Harbour-V3. I can't believe few people have noticed that map before, it was one of my most played maps ever since it came out, I also like the elevator.

I adored it as well, earning it a well-deserved place as Number 1.

And everybody loves the elevator ;) I just couldn't get a good pic of it
