This feature is already in some wish lists but there isn't an actual suggestion made for it.

The idea of warm up is simple.

Some people take longer than others to get in the server, while ideally you want people to start with the real game at the same time.

A common method used in a lot of games is just to let people wait till some time passes and then let the game start. The issue in public servers is that waiting for a longer amount is boring, while for short amounts not everybody can join so the game starts before everybody is in.

The idea of warm up is letting the server run a quick X minute round of team death match, before the real game will start. This allows both the final team and class selection to happen when everybody is in the server, as that it doesn't bore people to death in public games waiting for others to join.

Logically this should be fully optional. But it was a feature that really worked well in Return To Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

another suggestion requiring lots of coding for a non-issue.

you seem to be a specialist at this. no offense, i mean it as a compliment.

Red Orchestra: Ostfront got a console command that resets the game without restarting the map. If that command could somehow get triggered after a 5 minute interval then you are pretty much at the end point.

Most servers in current RO just have the pre- round match time actually set to 30 seconds (the default). This results in that initially you often only see a small group of say 8 players per team spawn at the first spawn even at a 50 player server.

Especially with countdown you cannot start a 50 player game with only 8 people, which is why TWI likely put in a ready system in countdown. This however requires people to wait for others for quite some time.

People are simply not willing to wait longer really than 1 minute. So a server Admin needs to make the game start after a minute even if only 1/3rd of the players are ready within that time otherwise they loose players.

This suggestion has been employed successfully with other games in the past, allowing the game not to start before people are ready, without boring them to death.

lots of coding? Why?

Should be done pretty simple. And it is a issue, because if the class selection is reset after ~30 seconds,
every player can select their favorite class at the same time!

This is much fairer then only the richest kids with the fastest PCs can select their class first!

(meaning the guy with the most memory can ALWAYS select sniper first, which is pretty unfair!) :(

It seems like a waste, it is literally just a period before the match starts where you are just running around and bayoneting people Making this thread as a poll would see where people stand on this a bit better.

I doubt any real action would start after 30 seconds. In UT2004 the farthest anyone got was half way towards the objective! And these RO2 maps are going to be massive! It'll just be a time to maybe plan out something? Or you can get a beer before the match starts!!! ;)

Besides, if we don't have this, it'll be first come first serve like ROOST. I hated loading in just a tad to late to find that the sniper, 2 mgs and all the semi autos are filled already. Leaving me with SMGs on open field maps or just the standard rifleman, which is always fun, but sucks cause you are forced into it.

I agree, a poll would better suit this.

Lawl the first time I saw the title of this thread I thought you were going to suggest that there be a feature where soldiers can warm their hands in the cold Russian winter ...

But anyway, I have always found warm up rounds to be a complete waste of time in all the games I've played that have them. Most of the time people just TK eachother massively or run around with guns blazing just to be obnoxious.

I'd rather have a PLANNING PERIOD where squads and their squad leaders can talk about their plan of action before the round begins.

Warmup time makes extra sense in RO if it allows defenders to occupy bunkers and trenches before the attacking team reaches them. Certainly everyone's encountered the absurdity of runing into a frontline bunker as a defender only to get mowed down by a prone SMGer in the corner who spawned a minute before anyone else in the server.
