What's considered OK when it comes to Field Promotions at the end of a round? I rarely accept them, cause it feels kinda of jerk-like to take someones position, but I usually take it if we lack a commander, since it usually evens the odds, and I have a good idea of how to play it.
But I've seen teams avoid commander like the plague for some reason; its usually empty. What about for Marksmen or Elite Assault/Rifleman? Those are usually full, and while I've never done it I can't imagine I'd be pleased if someone took my slot. Are their unspoken rules governing this?

While i have no problem with someone using battlefield promotion nicking my slot if there are none available.
I do not like people using it when there are slots available and it makes me respawn. I will give an example; as SL1 on apartments I was in the A cap, letting the squad spawn on me was saving them time and lives running past the grenade spamfest. When a message appears blocking my screen saying my position has been given to someone else, fair enough I thought, but while this message is blocking my screen I die. So I have to pick a new role and what surprised me is that there were 3 SL slots available, so I took one. So while the new SL1 ran up to the russian sniper buildings with his ppsh, I ran back to the A cap but with only 2 in my squad made little difference to the capping. I've seen a good commander kicked out of his role by a player who had no idea what to do due to a battlefield commision. I have even died as a rifleman because someone used it on the unlimited amount of riflemen and it kicks someone. So personally I would never use it and wish that people checked before they did, that a position is not already available. In case you are wondering how rare they are offered, everyone I know gets them at least once every couple of rounds so its not like you even have to do anything to be awarded one. I would like to see them given only at the end/start of rounds so peeps with crap pcs can get roles other than rifleman. |

I play a lot of SL these days but tend to avoid the TL position for the pressure of being a good commander. But if it turns out the TL is a complete idiot I have no problems with taking over his job.
If the TL is decent enough I don't see the point in kicking him out of place though. |

That makes sense; I know its offered quite a bit for the most random of reasons. And agreed, don't take a spot that's taken and being done WELL. I rarely see commander played...it's odd, you'd imagine a class like that would be among the first to go, but nope.
I only ever take it to direct the bots; I was surprised how well that works. Maybe a bit more dialogue on this would help, since when I started playing I saw no mention of it anywhere and it took me by surprise when the "Battlefield Promotion!" thing came up.

It's a reward for playing well in the game, so don't worry about feeling guilty about taking a certain role.

Personally, I don't take 'em. Unless, as stated, I feel there is severe under-performance from an SL or TL. It's kind of a dick move otherwise, surely. Most annoying is being ousted from an MG slot if you're really sticking it to 'em.
![]() Or if you get ousted from your SL spot so the guy who was too slow in the role selection can get his beloved PPSh and act as another assault trooper. Last edited by Gftr. Getsome; 01-19-2013 at 09:00 AM. |

I have not noticed my role being taken. Maybe I just forgot.
99% of the time I don't take it Since I am generally playing the class I want. (riflemen or SL when others don't step up)

I don't take it, but I think it a swell mechanism to let those with slow connection speeds get to try out all roles every now and then.

It seems that at some point during one of the later patches they changed it so you actually can't steal the role of the commander, but all other roles are up for grabs.
If I get it as riflemen I do occasionally rolesteal SL if the team and especially the SLs has done real poorly, just to show them how it should be done. But the majority of times I turn it down, also because of bad experiences of not spawning on account of it etc (though I think that has been fixed as well in later patches).

I take it then re-pick my role. I hate it when someone takes my class away from me, especially when I've been doing a ruddy good job as that class too! :<

Only once have I accepted a field promotion: on Spartanovka. My team was suffering from a commander that didn't (know how to?) call artillery. I felt it was in the best interest for the team to have a TL who calls artillery.
Other than that one case, I always ignore it. Field promotion is about as lame as it can get. |

I accept it all the time, but usually stick to my existing class I am using. I don't often, but sometimes I take a class before the match begins if someone has been using that class for 2 rounds or so (hogging imo :P) but that's rare.
A few times I have had players take my class in the middle of the match and I'm right in the middle of a battle. That stupid pop up comes up, I hit continue to go to the class selection screen and then just hit Escape to get back to the action in my existing class. ^ I've seen that player run by me while I'm still alive and using the class I'm using, but I don't switch until I am killed. So if you're in the middle of a battle and don't want to instantly die from selecting a class mid way through, hit the escape key when you get to the spawn screen and you can continue as normal until you die.... then you need to select another role. Quote:
Other times when I want to nuke an objective and not get bot TK's in the process, I order them to follow me, then stick by the radio until the barrage is over then rush in with them in tow..... works great. But make sure you order them to resume or attack the next objective if you plan to switch to another class. Over the weekend I switch to the marksman class and while I was trying to keep out of sight, I had most of the bots still following me everywhere I went, giving away my position and preventing them from going to the objectives unless I went there myself.... quite annoying. The problem with accepting and sticking with the same class is it still kicks someone, who has to change role when he dies even if its the same one.
Last night i was the only AT guy on fallen fighters and still got the message your role has been given to someone else. Pressing escape is fine but remembering to change role when you die and missing a spawn or two is a pain just because someone is dumb and didnt see that there were three open slots already. As for it is a reward, I received it for giving out ammo to three mgs, one kill assist and a tk yesterday, hardly hero material. Please just use it to take full slots. |

Situation reminds me of the episode of Band of Brothers attack on Foy, where Spears gets the "field promotion" and plays a much better commander. :-p

It shouldn't take the position from the best performing user of that class really. I don't know whow that would work but many times I have been leading the team as MG and some retard takes it and does nothing with it.
When I receive it I rarely take another class, as I usually have the one I want. |

I'm glad there seems to be a general consensus, this thread was a lot more informative then I expected it to be.
-Don't take it from a well-performing member of your team. -Don't take it for no reason; it kicks people out of their slot. -DO take it if your team sorely needs it, or if your saving your team from an awful commander. -DO take it if your a slower machine and want a chance at something else; just remember the above. Does that sum it all up? Or have I missed something? And thanks for chiming in; I don't want to step on toes online, and this helped a lot.

Despite being top preformer quite a lot I never get field promotions anymore, I think it also ties into which level your character is.
Am I correct? |
