[Game] Battlefield 3

Apparently from GI:

Okay, so going through the article:

-Aiming for CY Q4 2011 release
-Concept for BF3 has been in the works for years, waiting on proper tech to seamlessly come together
-Frosbite 2.0 is the culmination of this tech, entirely re-written
-Lighting sounds neat, one "probe" contains more lighting information than an entire BFBC2 level.
-Level destruction is going to be "believable" but basically everything is destructible.
-Character animations powered by ANT, what EA Sports uses.
-AI characters and multiplayer characters have different animation sets
-No more "gliding" animations that look off, animation realism is a focus
-Captured their own war audios (bullets, tanks, helicopters, etc) at different distances to ensure realism
-Better audio cues for certain actions, more easily able to listen for threats
-Plan on better, more immediate post release content
-More unlocks than BFBC2
-Dice trying to find a good balance between customization of your character and not having "pink rabbit hat(s)"
-4 classes
-Will talk about squads "later"
-Looking into a theater mode but can't talk about it
-Will have co-op
-There will be a kill-cam but it can be turned off
-BF3's team is almost twice as big as the team for BFBC2
-They want the pacing of the single player mode to be balanced, with highs and lows. Makes the comparison to a song vs a guitar solo.
-Part of the single player mode takes place in Sulaymaniyah - Iraqi Kurdistan.
-"****" will be used often, so M rated for sure
-There will be an earthquake in a level. The destruction sounds very impressive. 7 story building collapses, looks very well done
-Significant narrative that goes with the SP mode
-More than one setting, you're not in the middle east for the whole game
-PC version is lead version
-Why 64 players for PC only? No complains from the console crowd.
-No mod tools at release. Maybe none down the line either. Frosbite 2.0 is complex and mods tools would have to be dumbed down, so does Dice really want to put their time to that or would it be better spent elsewhere?
-Original story, not based on Bad Company at all.

That sounds great. Now I'm really looking forward to it. Tuned down destruction, more realistic animation and movement and no dolphy diving.

I don't care about the single player though. All of them seems to be same Call Of Duty all over again. Hopefully the focus won't be on that part of the game, with all of their 2x the size of BC2 team.

No commander, no modtools ... I don't understand it. PC is lead platform and they're developing the game for PC first and then porting it to consoles. So why remove the commander? People always loved that and it really added something to the gameplay. So how exactly can the game be deeper than BF2 if they remove this tactical role? Screens look nice, but I REALLY hope there will be other factions too in MP at least, because I simply can't stand the old USMC soldier with M4+Eotech vs bad terrorists/russians with AK47s anymore. A Europe faction(or even more awesome, different european) nations would really add some diversity. How awesome would it be to have the following: USMC(or US Army, whatever), EU Forces(with variable weaponry), MEC(with rather old russian stuff) or Iran, Russia(with new russian stuff) and PLA.

I agree 64 players without commander won't work. BC2 made do with it's "spotting", it helped to shift firepower and make the teams aware of enemy. But I don't see how a 32 player team can be organised, without a commander role. So silly.

Hopefully they have more things to say about this on 1st March.

Occasionally with a lot of explosions, I get down to 28-30 frame rates in BFBC2. Otherwise it is 40-50. With a mere GTX 260, 4GB RAM and AMD 9950.

Considering it is based off the same engine, I don't think all of these graphical updates will really require that high end of a system assuming it is optimized like Frostbite 1.5 was.

No commander, no modtools.
Just what I expected.

Agreed

Already thougght about that in 2142, since it's supposed to be a war between the EU and a pan asian coalition but it's always brits and russians.

Yet another game with the badass american marine on the front, didn't bother to read through the article just for that. When they get something NEW (and yes, graphics play an important role to me for aesthetic reasons) and not just a couple of new features, I will sure give it a try.

Not saying that I won't play the game and will bash it every time it is mentioned, but another game with this setup just made me write this (useless) post rather than read through all of the new info as fast as I could like I would some years ago...
