I'll Show You Mine If You'll Show Me Yours (Part Deux)

The East German M1 Carbines are like a lot of the other surplus stuff that the Americans sold off after the war (Danish M1 Garands, etc).

In this case, the East German Border Patrol had an afluence for the M1 Carbine and purchased a large number of them after the war.

In my case, they purchased a GI issues, 1943 produced, M1 Carbine.

i know west germany and austria purchased M1 carbines but somehow i don't see the US government selling weapons to east germany...

Oops, right you are.

Mine is West German. My bad.

Though, sprusingly, it lacks any of the usual markings associated with the West German use, such as the extra serial numbers on the triger guard, or the usual 'Bavaria Police' markings.

The only way I'd know it was Wester German is because of the modified rear sight.

WOW, so that's a real Mauser model? I thought they never really got into the field because the Walther design won or have I got it arse backwards?

In any case nice stuff, man I hate Australian gun laws, I so dearly want an SVT40 and a Garand.

The Walther design did win, but a bunch of Mauser's were produced and sent to the front for troop trials, part of the reason why Walther's design one i think. Very rare rifle in any case.

Gotta agree with you on gunlaws mate, tho i've actually seen a real functional M1 Garand at the gunstore, which was quite a thrill, however he has to have it returend because in WA even gunstores arean't allowed to have semi-auto's like that, ridiclous.

It's plum colored like most SVT 40 refurb bolts. some are just lighter than others. I owned a Finnish B barrel M39 that had a barrel that color. I should have never sold it.:(

Here's an example.

I've caught the AR bug and I really want a AR 15. Does anyone have an opinion on the DPMS brand of rifles?

SoupNazi can answer this better than I can (He just finished an AR-15 build, don't know the upper/lower), but the DPMS receivers are somewhat sought-after by people building "KA"-15s here for the California Legal (Off-list Lowers) build. The legal ones don't have the Panther emblem or name.

You should get an SMLE or No.4 MKI, Josh. The bolt is super-fast. I'd have a video of SoupNazi shooting mine but my camera broke so it cannot turn on and the memory card does not fit a universal USB thing I have. :(

Both can be had for a pretty good price here in the 'States. My 91/30 and M44 were both around $120, and my SMLE was $130 plus shipping. My Finnish rifles (built off of Mosin receivers) are much higher than that, $201 for my Fin 91/30, and my M39 from an 1896 receiver was around $600.

If you want a rifle that fires cheap ammo that does not go click-bang and has reasonable accuracy, get a typical Russian Mosin-Nagant 91/30, M38, or M44.

Myself, I like the SMLE much more than my Mosins (except for my Finnish ones. They both look and shoot great). The Bolt is much faster and smoother plus it has a two-stage trigger (as does the M39). On the Mosins you continually pull and you will not know when it will go off. It takes a few dozen rounds to really get used to it.

The only problem with an SMLE is that a lot of the surplus .303 ammunition is not good; you will pull the trigger and there will be a slight delay between you doing that and the round going off. It makes accuracy really go to ****. That's not a problem with the surplus 7.62x54R.

I'd imagine that your typical SMLE will out perform the typical Mosin with proper ammunition (Proper bullet diameter for the bore) though.
