Ah, I remember it well...
February, 2006, and Alan Wilson was giving out beta keys for an upcoming game called "Ostfront". At the time I was playing BF2 in a large community, and we were working on a mod for that game called "Tac Mod", which was later incorporated into the "Project Reality" mod... I won a set of those beta keys for Ostfront and remember my first spawn was as a German rifleman on Königsplatz. The Tiger rolled past, there was ambient artillery in the distance, and an MG42 started ripping away nearby. Then I was shot and killed. Then again. Then again. But eventually I started to figure things out. Oh yeah, anyone remember what the three beta maps in rotation were? Arad, Königsplatz, and...was it Stalingradkessel? Hmmmm... Well, I thought the tanks in Ostfront were amazing, and I really liked how people would sit back in a T-34-76 on Black Day July and plink your Tiger and then accuse you of hacking when you blew them up in one shot. I still think armored combat was the best thing about Ostfront, and I always appreciated players who took the time to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each tank. A worthy opponent was well respected. Anyway, as rough a time as RO2 has had I think think it's one of the most fun games around, warts and all. Though I would be lying if I didn't say I miss the variety that was armored combat in Ostfront.

I had celebrated a lovely (yet unmemorable) Christmas back in 2006 with my family. My brother and I went back to our respective lives and... I think it was January 2nd... he said "Oh, I gifted you a game online. I think you'll really like this one."
****ing best present ever. ![]() EDIT: As far as my FPS history... I can't remember it all.... but my favorite multiplayer parts were Hexen, Goldeneye, Turok: Rage Wars, Perfect Dark, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, UT2k4 RTCW: Enemy Territory, RoOst, and DH. Interestingly enough, I first heard of Red Orchestra on the /k/ board of 4chan. It sounded interesting and it was only $7 so I decided it was worth buying. When I heard that a sequel was coming out I knew I was going to buy it sooner or later.

I loved to play bolt-action-only on COD2/COD5. I was checking some movies about it on Youtube and came to this :
WW2 Game(s) - Weapon Sound Comparison - Part 1/6 - YouTube When I saw the second clip of that movie, I was sold. The shots, the reloading animation, the sound,...

On a day i saw the ROost box in a shop and grabbed it...
The models of the tanks were also amazing but i like fighting with it in RO2 much more. No ping pong anymore. But there must be things bettered.

Got into Roost when I heard about RO2 and saw that although Roost was a smaller and older game it still had a big enough competitive scene for one to enjoy.

I'm amused by the number of people who've mentioned MoH:AA as a pre-RO staple of their FPS experience. I remember my time playing through its SP and MP content in the days when dial-up was standard and the slightest tampering with your land-line telephone would shut down your Internet connection.
Prior to RO: Ostfront I had dabbled in just about every genre of game across every available console. I came across a lone hard copy of RO: Ostfront in a Target store, and I distinctly recall being intrigued by all the information displayed on the fold-out tabs of the plastic box cover. I took it home with me and, as the saying goes, the rest was history. After putting a few hundred hours or so into RO: Ostfront by the time RO2 was announced, my eventual purchase of the sequel was fait accompli. |

I came from DOD i played dod from the very early beta days all the way to the source version then waited for the update to put thingd like the hit reg right
unfortunately the update didn't fix what we hoped and after that i like many lost hope and looked for something else - many of my old clan [DA - UK] took to BF, but i couldn't get unthuised about BF and found RO more to my taste been playing ever since. |

I guess im a true RO veteran.
I remember years ago on the beyond unreal forums that i saw some random developers signature of the team and it spiked my interest. I think this might have been before ut2k3 was announced regardless ut2k3 was not out yet. At the same time however i was playing infiltration and especially The Third Reich, you know only the mod which Ramm inititally was in. There is actually still some work being done on finally getting a sequel out. The third reich and infiltration got me hooked on realistic fps games and thus i kept an interest for RO. However i did not have a pc capable of running ut2k3 and by the time i did UT2k4 was around the corner and i just waited for RO to get ported to that. I played RO and was pretty much hooked. Right away, it was not really a big step for me but i was not instantly good or anything. When summer got along I tried to join the first attempt at a dutch RO clan called Landstorm divisie or LSD in short. That never took off but seeds were sown so to say. By febuary next year i decided to actually persue joining a clan fully and doubted between {Core} and DBDUK. Eventually after a month long trial period(because Core was not really recruiting at the time) i got in. Played games and had a very good time. This is really where RO shone best i think. The game was perfect for clan games and this is I think THE reason why RO did as well as it did. Eventually the mod scene gradually weakened but never died with RO1 coming closer. This was a great time in the community. Everyone knew each other and everyone knew PT was the best clan ever. For me RO1 was a very good game and while it required some mild readjusting old habits I finally started to get really good at it. I had some issues with some people in Core and eventually left and joined IcM. A fun loving clan which i stayed with for the rest of my RO career. I participated in several nationscups and other leagues but almost always had issues during these events. This is not counting my standard problem of always producing static noise from my microphone. I was also known as the helicopter for this reason for a large part of my RO career. I had great times around but eventually people started to lose interest because exploiting and cheating became more and more common. I still had a great time with clan matches if they went right. Eventually i followed a few fellow IcM people and joined a mostly german speaking clan on temporary basis and played a few very fun games with them. IcM pretty much closed off the RO1 experience with the final tournament. The olden icm curse resurfaced as my and the other icm people in the german speaking clan were maybe the best players when we played them in the tournament we sucked. The story of our clan really, we had a good time most of the time but never quite lived up to our potential. My activity in the ro community then led me to get selected for the intial beta testing of RO2. I liked testing this very much, however eventually i left on a lengthy summer holiday. When i got back RO2 was around the corner and i found that performance was going to be the major issue for me to play RO2 and getting a new pc was not something that was going to happen right away. When it got out performance was even worse because of punkbuster etc. The maps were not as good as i hoped, there were too many automatic weapons and very importantly a lot of clan functionality was not there. I saw so many people try to grasp RO2 but at no point did it ever feel like we were going to get the old thing back. Performance on my laptop gave me a laptop and after IcM tried and failed one last time i let it go. Been on the sidelines ever since but seeing roladder go was still a emotional moment for me. Ive heard performance is a lot better these days but ive not had the luxury of having a stable internet connection(once again) since ro2 came. However soon it looks like i will be able to finally return to the wonderful land of online game and i will give ro2 a shot. Even though i have kinda grown more towards music and less towards gaming. Oh and for the people who say ro2 was more like the mod than ro1. I disagree. The mod had maps like Berlin and karlovka. RO2 never really had any such maps. Also don't underestimate how good RO1 was. It is very hard to deliver a proper sequel to one of the best competitive shooters ever and i think in many ways they were close but no still no cigar.

Quote:
It's hard to bottle lightning, and RO2 is a good example of that. RO1 was somehow more than the sum of its parts, and that I think RO2 can (will) be very good with continuous improvement, and if the Linux port comes, more the better.
