E3 just isn't what it used to be anymore. The E3 used to be an expo where devs can show their newest games to the gamers. Whence the booth babes, huge shows, info about interesting new games etc.
Now the E3 is more there for other developers to make them want to develop for the consoles/engines presented and for regular people to draw them in with new multimedia capabilities. Showing games is just a side-aspect of the E3 now (many new games aren't even mentioned and some are being shown at another time).
So in this regard, it probably was a success.
