I have not looked into it, but... I wonder if you could turn off head tracking and just look around with a mouse. For long term use I would not want to be turning my head all the time.

That actually seems possible, I'm not even sure you need for the game to officially support it for that, since it's technically working as just a second monitor without headtracking.

I played Arma 2 with TrackIR, and that's really great! But as Arma has a weird mouse sensitivity, when i recenter my mouse or head to my head or mouse, i'm a bit displaced
but that's due to the game, and it is still really immersive.I originally bought the TrackIR to play StarCitizen when it will be released and when i saw Arma 2 was supporting it, i bought it also as Dirt3. Now when i play other FPS like TeamFortress, i try to freelook with my head but it does nothing, then i remember... "not supported yet "I understand peoples can doubt about the device, but once you've tried it for some hours and get used to it... You want to use it in everygame

Looks really cool, I'm glad to see this concept moving forward. I just hope they're not depending too much on Carmack's support because at this rate Bethesda's parent company is going to shut down Id when they fail to finish Doom 4 on time.

I'm really hoping this gets implemented to RO2, the level of immersion really would boost the realism sensation beyond anything else other games can offer (with or with out the OR).
With the intense realism RO2 already has can you imagine what it can offer with true stereoscopic head mounted vision!? Imagine playing as a tanker, looking around inside the tank, actually feeling like your inside the tank. Seeing tracers being fired at your position (and contributing to the suppression effect your self by ducking and dodging with your head) . Intuitively using the free aim with the depth perception afforded. No need for depth of field perception filters since it will happen naturally when you focus on objects at different distances with true stereoscopy (like looking down the sights, not to mention the realistic sensation of using scopes with the way they are implemented in RO2 as is). Bayonet charges or being charged! Close to actual realistic field of view. Just the way the details like rubble in the bombed out ruins of Stalingrad will pop out, same with Jungle warfare in Rising Storm and In Country: Vietnam. The list goes on and on! There is already UE3 support for the OR, and setting up the resolution and orientation of the stereoscopy isn't too much work. The parts that will need a bit more work for a truly seamless integration will be full body first person perspective models, adjusting animations and maybe adding to the rear portions of some gun models (butt stocks etc). Aside for the obvious benefits of OR implementation, it will also mean that RO2 gets put in a very lucrative PR and sales position with being a game that comes with OR support (especially if early on!) and thus one of the killer apps, this will benefit the community and TWI. The consumer model is targeted to offer 1080p (or equivalent pixel density rather) per eye and cost around $250-$300. Here is a video with an honest review of the development kit prototype that I found very good, most interesting perhaps is that they show some of the different control interfaces possible and discus pros and cons (I thought the "default 3" one looked the best). Good to see this device continues to get attention in the media:

I would only use this if the head could move independent to the body, so I can aim and move my arms with my mouse, move and all the other actions with the keyboard, but actually look around with the rift...just like in Arma II with track IR

Looks like something that might work, but how will you be able to find the bottle of beer from the table with those things on?
( not to mention the "where the F is that key" situations). I can't really see myself using those things on FPS games, at least in recent future. Some other applications might work better for me, though I dunno what those might be apart from 3D movies. My previous experience with this sort of thing was some big helmet-like thingy that I tried to play Heretic with, controller being some weird hockey puck looking device with buttons in it. Year might have been around 1995, and my next experience with 3D entertainment was with Hobbit a few months back, so there was a bit of a gap there. ![]() For those still doubting the technology: You can get a hat for using it on TF2, so it must be a success.
