How did Washington beat out William the Conqueror? That seems off to me.

So the guy who won was an average military leader who did his level best to lose the war by his ineptitude and bad leadership as opposed to someone like William the Bastard who beat a nation and totally changed the course of this nation,its language,customs,rulers,people for ever.
In fact if it wasn't for the massive French aid,money,help and troops then Washington was screwed from the start.
