Katana + Axe or Claymore + Axe?

Problem with using both claymore (actually 6kg now) and the fire axe (5kg) is the combined 11kg weight. That cuts into you using a lever action (6kg), M4 (6kg), or M79 (4kg), since 1 of the 15kg carry limit for non-support is always used. The .44 magnum is an option, but reload speed could be a turn-off for using it. I guess it's not a big deal if you have good covering-fire from a teammate, but I'm sure most zerkers would be more comfortable carrying something to deal with crawlers.

Claymore's purpose is similar to Axe, so I don't understand why someone could use Claymore + Axe combo. I think choice is between Katana + Axe or Katana + Claymore. Claymore has one big disadvantage (that should be fixed imo): it switches first when pressing "1", but Katana is used more ofter and should be accessed first.
Another disadvantage is +1 weight block comparing to the Axe, but it is reasonable trade-off.

Whats the damage difference between the claymore and the axe? Can i kite n kill fp's with it and does that +1 kg compared to the axe pay off for something?

It's minimal. The Claymore does a bit more damage than the Axe, but it also has a lower headshot multiplier than the Axe. So in the end: Stronger bodyhits, about equal (sliiiightly more powerful) headhits.

The Claymore is faster in dps and attack speed overall, but its attack unfortunately has a longer delay before it lands its hit. So while it does have higher speed & dps, the Axe is better for "reflex counterstrikes" than the Claymore (like against Crawlers), despite the Claymore's slightly longer attack range and all. The swing of the Axe is simply smoother, as it lands its hit more in the start/middle of its animation, while the Claymore does so towards the end of its animation.

AND you can't carry Claymore + Katana with LAR. So all things considered, imo, the Claymore actually kinda suck :(
If the Claymore secondary attack dealt 335 damage, rather than its current 320, so a level 5/6 Berserker could stun a Scrake with it even on a bodyshot, then it would at least have some redeeming quality over the Axe.

I don't think allowing to stun Scrake with frontal bodyshot is a good idea - it dramatically reduces player skill requirement. If Claymore could hit multiple targets per single swing (with damage reduction for subsequent hits), it would be awesome.

They should decrease Claymore weight to 5.

Then there would be no reasons to use Axe at all.
This is why the Claymore needs something extra. Currently there is no reason to use the CLAYMORE. Axe is just as good as the Claymore, while allowing the Katana+Axe+LAR combo. Claymore does not, thus it would be good if Claymore could do such a thing as stun Scrakes with frontal bodyshots. You lose the LAR and thus a great ranged weapon's potential, but you gain easier Scrake-stunning. A tradeoff, and making the Claymore more of a sidegrade rather than a downgrade (as it is currently).

If primary was a rather slow cleaving horizontal attack for hitting multiple targets in one swing, that would make it more interesting too, yes :)

Well, the .44 can open up some new styles for the Sharpie, like:

1) Xbow + 44 magnum + Katana
2) Xbow + 44 magnum + MP7 or MP5m

1 is good if the trashkilling is a tad insufficient from the other members. 2 is better if the healing is lacking. So the 44 magnum isn't all too bad for the Sharpie. :)

Feels like most of the new weapons are downgrades. :(

Downgrade from what?
M4 is between the L22A1 and the AK47. That means, yes, it's a "downgrade" from the AK in terms of damage. However, it has a faster rate of fire and higher maximum ammunition capacity then the AK. In those two aspects, you could consider it an "upgrade."

A few posts from the Tripwire team have mentioned "sidegrades" as a goal. Weapons that are similar to, but not a clear upgrade from, a comparable weapon. That's exactly what the M4 is when compared to the AK. If the M4 was better than the AK in every single aspect, why bother using it? Instead of most Commando players recommending AK/SCAR as an all assault-rifle load-out, they'd (probably) suggest M4/SCAR instead.

After all the clamoring for variety in the Ideas & Suggestions section, we get some official (not white-listed, official) weapons. :D

Add here:
M79 + M32 + Pipes + 44 magnum
AA12 + HSg + 44 magnum

After 1031 update dual magnums benefit from sharpshooter's bonuses too and due to high rate and quick perked reloading they're nice. You can try:
Xbow + Dual 44 magnums
or even
LAR+HC+Dual 44 magnums
