When I try to start Killing Floor through steam I get the splash screen for a few seconds and then this error:

Runtime Error!

EDIT:

I put the .exe into Compatibility mode: Win98/ME

That seems to have fixed the problem.

I remember this one.

Anyone with this issue, make sure msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll are in your C:\Windows\System32 folder(alternatively, they can just be placed in the C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Killingfloor\System folder).

Download for MSVCP71.dll
Download for MSVCR71.dll

I think this should resolve the problem. Let me know how you get on.

I have both those files in both those places.

Same here.

I reinstalled several times, checked my drivers and DirectX 11 and even tried the compatibility mode. Nothing helped.

Sometimes I also get this error:
