General Firearm Discussion

Everyone forgets the G11 can fire 3 rounds before you feel the recoil when they're talking about the AN-94.

I'd rather take an AEK or AK-107/8. They have the "balanced automatic recoil system" which basically just means there's a weight that is pushed forward by the gas at the same time the bolt travels backwards, so it nullifies most of the felt recoil.

These modern Russian military rifles (especially the 9x39mm ones) are awesome, but Americans will probably never get a chance to shoot them.

I would drink a 1000 bottles of Vodka for one of those....

Welp, I think I've settled on which shotgun I want. Saiga prices are just going through the roof, and they're starting to get frowned upon in competition. Some matches, you have to shoot in open class if you want to use one, meaning you're up against the real pro-type shooters. I'm not nearly in that class.

So, I think I'm going to get a Mossberg 930 SPX. I've got a hookup so I can get one at dealer cost.
Spoiler!

I should have a pretty decent 3-gun setup here pretty soon. I'll be putting a Beretta 92SF into the 10-day waiting period tomorrow - I'll take some pictures of the setup to show off - and I've already got a decent AR. I'm thinking about getting a new upper with a flattop for the AR, though, so I can use some sort of decent optics. My vision isn't really good enough anymore to engage man-size targets beyond about a hundred yards with iron sights.

Looks like you'll be needing one of these:
http://www.mecreloaders.com/ProductLine/Product.asp

and one of these:

Can't speak for 3 gun as I've never seen a match, but from past experience with IPSC the Dillon Square Deal is hard to beat for strictly pistol reloading and the occasional shoot. But if you get into it hot and heavy, you'll need something beefier. I sold my XL650 about 15 years ago to a friend. Though its mounted in all its glory on his reloading bench, he's not used it in at least 5. I might can talk him out of it....;)

I'd actually like to get into reloading. I'd love to be able to burn a couple hundred rounds a week of 9mm at the range, at least. Nearest range where I could shot heavy stuff is about 1.5 / 2 hrs away, unfortunately.

I'll be needing 9mm, 5.56 and 12ga, at least. I'd like to reload for 7.62x54R as well.

Last 3-gun match I shot I burned about 70 rounds of 9mm, 100 or so of 5.56, and 30-40 of 12ga, for the actual match. Another 100 or so of each for practice beforehand.

Shotgun reloads are a breeze. Just need lots of storage room for the hulls, wads, shot, etc.

For pistol only, again, I heartely recommend Dillon's Square Deal progressive reolader. Its relatively inexpensive, gives very accurate repeatability and they have an exceptional service/support dept. Great way to break into reloading large quantities of ammo. And its probably just as cheap as buying all the stuff to reload one round at a time, too.

From a suggestion by a friend, back in the early '80s, I gave my Dad (who was shooting Seniors in IPSC) a Square Deal for Christmas one year. He was gunsmith, ex-bullseye pistol shooter and a fanatic about his reloads. Seating, precise powder charges, etc. He loved the reloader. He began having problems with the main arm breaking and at one point Dillon mailed him (free) extras while they worked out the problem. When they fixed they problem, they sent a new one (again) free of charge. A year or two later, he bought an XL650. They are a great company, imo. But, I haven't made use of their services since the mid '80's. Hopefully they haven't changed.

XL650 should handle all those rounds you mentioned (but it'll cost you more). You simply have to buy the die plates. You can check on thier website and see what they have.

I read a review of a guy once who bought a dillon press and used it for some 30 years, then took it back to get it fixed, they fixed it FOR FREE. He mentioned he had used it so much that he thought he should be paying for atleast some of the parts which had broken due to 30 years use, still free. Truly a 'NO.BS' attitude towards their products.

Just missed a .22LR Romanian AK locally. :(

On the bright side, it looks like Radom (from Poland) will try and import Berly style .22LR AKs. Might be worth waiting:

Also looking forward to that .22LR SCAR clone. Whichever works best and comes out first will be what I get.

Makes me angry that a lot of guns are banned from import simply because they look evil.

I shot a 30-30 Marlin 336A with a reflex sight on it today, man was that a lovely rifle to shoot, so light and easy to point. I was shooting offhand at a star picket on the 75yd line and hit it 4 times out of 6 shots. It's also the first time I've used a reflex as well, damn it is easy to shoot with one of those things.

I've wanted a 30-30 lever for a while now but was undecided between a Winchester 94 and a Marlin, I'm going to have to get me one of these Marlins now

I keep a Marlin 336A in my pickup truck for those necessary occassions on the farm...
Mines a .35 caliber with peep sights though. Really fun gun to shoot. Tough as nails, too.
(All these pics were taken today with my old cell phone...sorry for the lack of quality)

Here are some catridges for reference (Sorry, but I didn't have any 30-30's on hand):

Keep the form comments to yourself or I'll let you deal with her wrath...:p

a) That's a pretty long bullet in the necked up 223, how heavy is it?
b) What is the advantage of using an 7mm-08 instead of the probably cheaper .308?
a) you know, I don't recall off the top of my head. I'll have to check my notes. The bullet is barely seated in the neck so it just appears longer than it really is. Its a load put together for a custom stock with a Ruger #1 action that my son used for deer hunting when he was young. I had about 3 catridges left in a case and used one for comparison.

b) well, we could get into the BC thing again ;). Other than that, some perks you may hear include less recoil, a little flatter shooting at long ranges. Both are fine rounds for hunting. I haven't handloaded (or even purchased any factory ammo) in quite a while so I don't know what prices have done.

Would you mind informing me what is a pickup truck and a cell phone?

I've not heard of them here.

And on the topic of stances, i once read a post on a... ahem, weapons board where this guy was shooting, then a female came in with a similar stance and shot better than him. :p

I suppose people are a fair bit prescriptivist in terms of firearms.

Well with shooting technique I have always been a proponent of whatever works for you is what you go with. Leaning back won't matter so much for accuracy, it will matter once you start shooting higher caliber rifles with more recoil.

If you're not happy with her stance though Floyd you should do some schooling (or would that incur too much wrath :p).

That's a handsome rifle you have there, is that the model with shorter magazine tube, or does it still hold 6? The 30-30 I shot had the magazine tube running the length of the barrel.

I'm already pricing them, I'll probably get the flagship 336C with the nice walnut stock, a weaver rail for it and then have a look at getting a reflex or something similar. It will make a brilliant pig gun for the dense scrub up north.

I just can't find any real justification - for myself - in getting a lever action rifle. They're neat, but since semi-auto rifles are readily available - even in California - it just is money that I'd spend on a toy that I wouldn't ever even use.

That said, there is a lever gun that I've got just an unreasonable amount of lust for:

Ruger%2096-22.jpg

It's a Ruger 96/22. Basically, it's a 10/22 that is lever operated instead of blowback. I think it even uses the same magazines and barrels. It even looks like the only real difference is the FCG,but I don't know what internal differences there might be with the receiver.
