Default Game Performance confusion

I am a sort of PC gamer, I don't have a fancy PC I have a half decent one (well for everyday use maybe not games)

and I don't really know much about computers

so I want to play on medium settings but have to settle for Low settings otherwise FPS is crazy, also is there anyway to measure FPS

it is a regular (as in non gaming) laptop (don't moan students need laptops, I'm not hauling a desktop around)

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz
RAM 6 GB
Win 7
GeForce GT 520M (video RAM 3.7 GB, pixel shader version 5.0, vertex shader 5.0) I don't know what most of that means!
Free disk space 268.4 GB

so what is letting me down, I think it might be intel i5 but I know people who can make their games play well on intel i5 so I am confused

also does anyone know if win 8 is any good, or is it all touch screen rubbish? (come on it is rubbish, mouse pointer about the size of a pin, my finger about 1cm3 which is more accurate, also they only last 5 years because the acid on your fingers goes through and wrecks the insides)

What is holding you back is your video card. It is a low end card not designed for high end gaming.

Your I5 is also a bit lower then our recommended spec of 2.4 GHz, but should be able to handle most situations in the game.

You can watch FPS in game by pulling down the console and typing "stat fps" without quotations. Typing in "stat unit" will compliment stat fps and will tell you what part of the rendering is taking the longest (larger m/s is worse).

I also play Ro2 on my laptop. I would highly recommend using a program called gamebooster to help gain some fps. Also.. Setting your preference to "performance" in your nvidia control pAnel might help

Right click your ROGame.exe and click Properties. Then go to Compatibility, and tick Disable Visual Themes and Disable Desktop Composition. That should free up a bit of resources being used for Aero in the background.

It'll automatically revert back to normal when the game is shut down. All the little things help.

did you have something helpful to add? this is called the "support" forum, after all. not the "pointing out the obvious" forum.

I wasn't complaining, I was asking about whether it was the i5 which was affecting game performance or the nvidia

and what the command to view FPS was

Maybe you could find better video settings by using "stat fps" for your machine. Sometimes the problem is just one setting, that costs a lot of performance.

Have you tried to disable anti-aliasing?

very good points. use the tilde key "~" (below your escape button) to open the console. then type, stat fps. hit enter. now there will be a fps meter in the upper right of your screen. you can them decide whish settings help or hurt your fps.
aa, shadows, bloom, light-rays. that stuff is just fluff and kills fps. experiment to see what your machine can get away with. playing thois game on a laptop can be a challenge. you need to extract every last bit of power from that computer. there's lots of ways to do it. irst off, is to make sure there isn't un-needed programs running in the background. then optimize your computer for max performance and then the game to work with what you have. that cpu doesn't seem like a bad choice to run RO2, but this game is very cpu dependent.
don't give up. try tweaking setings and look at that fps meter and report back as to what you see. there's lots more suggestions that we can give you, if you're willing to work at it. (problem is, most folk seem to lazy do do it. consoles are to blame, i guess.)
