Default free image editing

Does anyone know a good free editor that I can add some text into some images I have. I tried irfanview but that didnt work out to well.

GIMP for Windows (assumung you are using Windows). There are other versions for other OS's there too.

it didnt help so Im wondering if someone could add this text to these pictures:









1st pic would say: "In the burning sands of North Africa..."
2nd pic would say: "Two armies battled it out."
3rd pic would say: "You decide the victor."
no text on 4th pic.

I'll fix it mate, the only problem is that the 3rd image seems stretched.

Easiest and cheapest one I've found is Upaint at www.ultimatepaint.com . I made an easy-peasy sig yesterday with lettering, etc in about 30 minutes with it. Nothing fancy, but okay.
