Third Party Maps - A Word of Warning

As many of you have noticed, third party maps are now starting to appear in the community.

Now there is currently a problem with the redirect system where it will attempt to send the server version of the map down to the clients (which is not something clients can play). This is something we are working to fix to go along with the final stages of the public release of the SDK.

We would recommend that any server running these maps to password their servers or warn players that they will/could potentially crash by trying to join the server without the map files installed previously on the client machines.

Surely the server version of the map should'nt be on the redirect at all? or do you mean the game server is trying to send the server files? if that's the case we can simply turn allowdownloads=False in ROEngine.ini,rather than password the server.

That's what i thought, so you should be able to stop that by going into ROEngine.ini and changing AllowDownloads=True to False
Unless that isn't working.

I seem to be able to get the server side map downloading not from the game server but from my redirect server. Obviously not the right thing but it shows the settings for a redirect server are working partly.

So could it be made that it is downloaded from somewhere on the www?

Yep, that's the "redirect server" feature of the UT engine - but currently the RO2 is broken as stated, so you'll receive the server version of the files instead of the correct client version

I am hoping that a solution for custom maps downloading is in the patch scheduled for next week.
