Default Simulating a Day/Night cycle

I was wondering if this is possible, I thought about making a skybox out of GIF images that would appear to have a sunrise/sunset, and adding in lights that fade in and out along with the skybox, but in practice is this even able to be done? Has anybody done it, yet?

Unreal Engine doesn't recognize GIF images however you could probably simulate it with a texture that fades to another picture or something. Getting a day/night cycle would take some work to get it to look good but could be done.

I'll keep that in mind for future reference, thanks.

You can make animated textures in the texture browser.

the only way I can think of to do it would be with trigger lights. Trigger lights are expensive and don't cast any shadows. Light from T.L's also tends to bleed through walls. In short - technically possible, but it'd be a really ugly map with bad performance.

I guess that's going to be a project in the future, trying to get day/night cycles to look and play good but only once I know more about the KFed

i think it would be too intensive for ut2k4 to handle, it can only push so much through to you at a time.

your best bet is to do story/mission style, (point A to B) and "trick" the players that it is now night time outside. (using multiskyzones, warpzone, duplicate outside area, one day, one night)

It is possible, but it's expensive as it has already been said.
There is a UT2004 map I know that simulates that trasition and it looks quite good, but I don't know if the author used custom scripts to realise that.

There was a ut2004 assault map that had that, but it only changed the skybox, can't rememebr the name now. Done easy with two different movers as sky box mesh.

edit: for some reason the forums are being gay and won't show my video.
