Mid-range for Beserker?

So I've noticed that as a beserker it an be often difficult to keep up with your team. I've tried focusing on larger enemies but they are easily dispatched by people using the marksmen class or other power weapons. I was thinking maybe giving the beserker a throwing spear or a whip allowing him to advance upon enemies from a bit of a distance may allow for an easier kill in certain situations.
