The idea is that magazines are no longer magically built into the weapons. If you pick up a weapon, you'll get what's left in the magazine, but you must manually pick up the ammo pouches for each weapon. This does not however mean that you will automatically drop the ammo pouches if you drop your weapon like in good old OST.

Yes if only the pick-up system was a little more usable when there's a pile o' stuff on one spot.

I remember individual magazines and clips. Those were fun because you could share ammo with a buddy.
