Looking to do what my friend is. Get a nice cheap SKS and convert it to a Dragunov.
Now I need the stock for it, but so far all the ones I'm finding are these hideous black ones, made out of plastic or fiberforce or whatever else they use. I'm looking for those nice bright red ones, wood preferably. Someone please help! |

First off, I hope you don't think that you're going to be getting 1 MOAs by converting something that fires 7.62X39 and putting a scope to it. I don't know how well it would work, but I GUESS you might be able to screw around with one of those Romanian PSL parts kits, though you don't actually have a dragunov, but something thats misrepresented as one.

That being said, you can buy a replacement part for your receiver that has scope mounts on it, and you can locate various folding or thumbhole synthetic stocks for $50-100. Just be sure you do your homework - you might be able to find an imported Dragunov/clone that costs about what you would pay for a base SKS and the parts to modify it.
SKS' are not poor rifles, but as was mentioned, you're not going to turn it in to a tack driver with basic modifications. Its just not built for the purpose. But if you're just looking for a rifle that will keep all of your bullets on the silhouette at 100 meters, an SKS will serve you just fine. Ask yourself very honestly (and you dont have to do it on here ) if you really need a more expensive accurized rifle. You might find that a basic SKS with your cosmetic upgrades is more than enough rifle for you. Then again, you might not.

Bleh. If you want to make your SKS "better" and not just pimp it out, I suggest getting a trigger job instead of one of those plastic stawk thingies.
If you're hoping to bring your SKS under ~2MOA, you're probably going to be disappointed. That said, 2~3MOA is perfectly adequate for the effective range of the 7.62x39 round: 200~300m. Being able to drop bullets into a 6"~9" circle at 300m is perfectly respectable, and a good Yugoslavian or Russian SKS ought to be able to do it. If you really want to mount a standard scope, I'd recommend getting a side-rail mount installed instead of a receiver cover mount. OR, if you're willing to accept that the SKS just isn't a "sniper rifle" platform, get a scout mount and put a red dot or scout scope (I recommend the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28) on it. |
