Default The Penal Battalion is live.

We don't have a game server but our format doesn't require one, our unit is for players who lone-wolf the pubs (though team-orientated play is in no way precluded). We might, at some point, go for a TS server and/or a game server but these are early days.

The site speaks for itself. All the images in the left-hand panel are clickable and there are futher clickables on the Personnel page.

The purpose, as ever, is to enhance the pleasure of gaming and this game, RO2-HoS, has been found, in my humble opinion, worthy of the effort (issues and problems not withstanding, they'll be fixed in the fullness of time).

We hope to see some of you come aboard...there are no restrictions, age or otherwise, apart from an expectation of mature and honourable behaviour.

Salute!

You better contact TWI management, because I think penalbatallions are not allowed.

Example:

ALL CLANS WISHING TO BE LISTED ON THESE FORUMS WILL COMPLY OR WILL BE REMOVED FROM THESE FORUMS.
  1. There will be a list of unit names banned completely from these forums at all times. The list is currently:
    • SD Einsatzkommando/ Sonderkommando der SS
    • SS-Polizei Battalion 303
    • 13.Waffen-Geb.Div. der SS "Handschar" (kroatische Nr. 1)
    • 21.Waffen-Geb.Div. der SS "Skanderbeg" (albanische Nr. 1)
    • 29.Waffen-Gr.Div. der SS (russische Nr. 1) and all reference to "Kaminski" units
    • 36.Waffen-Gren. Div. der SS and all reference to "Dirlewanger" units

None of those were penal battalions and penal battalions have no reputation for atrocities that I'm aware of. They have next to no reputation at all actually, they're almost an unknown/forgotten entity. I think ours is the only one that's even allowed firearms.

I think we're too hard for most players anyway.

The 36.SS Dirlewanger was a penal unit, comitting many atrocities in Poland especially.

Found this on the Wiki (for what that's worth):

"In contrast to those who served in the German penal battalions for minor offences, the volunteers sent to the "Dirlewanger" were convicted of major crimes which would be considered criminal in civilian courts."

It looks to me like the Dirlewanger was a very specific unit and not even remotely typical of the real penal battalions. The real penal battalions were barely armed and were used for digging trenches and clearing minefields, usually by being marched into them.

Soviet penal units were used for mine clearing. In the Wehrmacht, penal units (like the 999. Afrika penal unit) were fighting casually. The only (and major) difference with regular troops was the total lack of rest. Penal units were constantly fighting on the frontline.

The rules are clear and there is a list of specific names that are not allowed. We use none of them, ours is a fantasy unit based upon real units that were victims of the nazi regime, not perpetrators commiting atrocities on its behalf.
