Default Dx10

I thought its about time i educated myself on this thorny subject.

Someone said something a while back in a game of FH, that you don't need Vista for DX10, and i was wondering if someone might be able to second that?

Also, like, what exactly is different between DX9 and DX10 to warrant an entire new generation of vid cards? Like what exactly is the visual difference, what effects can DX10 render that 9 can't? In other words, is there really a reason to pay up for a new card?

These people are working on ways of getting DX10 without vista. Release for games is in early 2008.

Some comparison shots
Still comparisons from Lost Planet
Links to a video comparison in crysis

DX10 can look much better in some circumstances, but not so much better that I'd buy vista just to use it.

Hmm, wow, so my crazy friends calling down Vista-based hellfire were right huh?

All I can really say is that those Falling Leaf people are a light in the dark, man. As for the whole DX10 thing its pretty much "Buy our **** or you can't have pretty pictures." Never would have guessed. I mean, (slightly)prettier pictures are no big deal, but still, this sounds like bigger blackmail thatn the McCarthy trials.

what a joke, they are actually comparing those 2 pics to show each version's potential?, and people dont see the obvious scam?

this reminds me of the Crysis "unltra high" settings unlock, where the screenshots looked exactly the same,

and people so ****ing hyped about how good Dx10 looks, of course is gonna look better in Dx10, but only because you lock the highest for Dx9 and because you do those bull****e comparisons.

smells like Microsoft's dirty money

That flight Simulator X screenshot seems a bit fishy. Surely the ocean would need retexturing and such to get that effect. Surely DX10 doesn't change it THAT much

From what I understand there is nothing dx10 can do that dx9 can't, the apparent difference though is that dx10 handles such things more efficiently with it's different structure.

I am yet to be convinced personally though.

That is what I have heard too, which means that most of these comparison screen shots are mostly BS to make people switch OS/GFX card.

Nothing terribly amazing. OpenGL 3 looks more appealing should it ever be completed. :P

IMO It's being used as a reason for gamers to switch to Vista. To be quite honest if games ran on any other OS (open source or not) the same or better than Windows I doubt we'd be using it.

This is what I know on the subject.

DX 10 was supposed to be vista only, then xp and vista, and then Vista only again.

However along the way of setting up the DX 10 standards, nvidia screwed up something so their dx 10 cards (the 8xxx series) couldn't do the part of the DX 10 standard that would make it Vista only.

So MS had to remove that from the original DX specs. So technicly there is nothing preventing MS from putting DX 10 on XP. DX 10.1 no, but DX 10 could be done if MS wanted to with out doing a major OS overhaul. Thats what most people talk about when they say DX 10 could work on XP.
