TV Remote Controls HDTV Monitor

I have both a TV/Monitor and a TV of the same brand. The TV remote also controls the monitor. So if I want to turn the TV off, down goes the monitor. If I change the volume, both change. Clearly this is not very fun to deal with so does anyone have any ideas how to solve this?

I already tried a universal remote, googling, reading the manuals, and the brand's online support to no avail. The support guys told me to hold my hand over the monitor receiver or put a metal plate there.... Surely someone else in the world has the problem. One of those strange times where something that seems relatively common seems to never have been experienced before and I am out of ideas.

Put a piece of electrical tape over the receiver on the monitor.

Little mirror's should do the trick. Deflect the beam into your neighbor's lounge .

So the only way to solve this is jerry-rig it? I'd like to turn off the monitor's ability to receive remote signals without physically changing anything. Balls.

Jerry-rig is your only option. Either cover it with something, or pry open the receiving port and disconnect a wire.

Well thanks for the help everyone. I'll just control the tv volume and power with the physical buttons on the tv and then use the cable box remote which doesn't affect the tv to control channels.

I never really understood why a monitor would have a remote control, I mean, it's right there, isn't it?

My TV controller interferes with the cable device.

To avoid it, I just use the controller from a position in which i have a table blocking the trajectory of the controller gamma rays to the cable thing.

My Samsung monitor (my secondary one) also doubles as a TV and thus has a remote. The remote comes in handy if I am not sitting at the desk and I'm watching TV.

You guys have either wird displays or weird remotes. I think almost all remotes i had, though preset, could be trained to work with one machine or the other.

I avoid the issue buy buying televisions as televisions and computer monitors as computer monitors.

But, they really need to move beyond the 4 digit pin codes. Makes this crap a nightmare...

These days it seems like alot of the best monitors also double as HDTV's.

I tried programming the universal remote to a different code than the monitor but it seems they both use all the same ones.
