Can someone help me on this photograph from The Atlantic?

Captioned: Polish women are led through woods to their executions by German soldiers sometime in 1941.
I can't tell if they are German or Soviet, as their helmets look like the early M36 helmets. The German helmets are not nearly as rounded off at the top, either, as the Soviet M36's are.
The greatcoats also look Soviet as well.
Could this be a caption error? Am I delusional? What are all of your thoughts?
