I have got to the point where I can actually open x.x.x.x:7777 but it gives the message:
You cannot join the match because the host has downloadable content you do not.

I updated both the server and client to the latest version. I personally don't like this game and I only purchased it today to try to troubleshoot the problem for the community.

This should be correct, just make sure that you're downloading them into respective folders where the current servers are. You should also try to login with a steam account that has the game on it, although I doubt it's relevant it's helped me in the past with older servers.
