I think it would be nice if there were flares (or something else) to let your friends know where you are on the map when you need help. That is, unless there's some sort of blueprint for each map... because on a map like icebreaker it's near impossible for me to locate my teammates in a ship that has two million rooms.
 
A flamethrower can be used as a impromptu flare gun, but 9_6 is right, you should really know where your teammates are, sticking together is the best option. Also, the only map I can think of where you get lost is Bedlam, flares wouldn't work there, would they?

I think the solution here is to have named zones in all maps, so team chat displays where your players are.

Flares would be cool to use when marking out postions.
Feel free to shoot vertically upwards with a flamer.

I wonder who actually looks up to the sky in such a frantic game though...
If I want to meet with someone I got separated from, I tell them to get to the trader.
That's a position marker for everyone right there.
