Type "enablecheats" in console without the quotes, and then type
cheatview xpawn
And it will display the specimens trapped. Type that same thing again to cycle through the specimens.
To return back to your own camera type "cheatview bot", Im not sure wether bot is really the right command for players but at least it worked for me :S
Actually, in the console you can input "rmode 1" to enable wireframe mode, and see through walls. I found it invaluable in tracking AI movements when fine-tuning my paths. in SP, enabling cheats is not even necessary.

I thought it was... though, depending on whether you have portals/antiportals in place, or if zoning actually is working the way its intended, it may not work for specimens in another zone.
I'm not using it at the moment as I did solve the problem, I left this up because it is useful anyway.
I also found that you could go "slomo x" to move around faster insert a value instead of x.
If anyone has the same problem as me then check your spawn points do not touch any part of the BSP geometry, this results in specimens that spawn in terms of the specimen counter and that dont appear so you cant shoot them.
