Unticking "use system driver" under audio causes BSoD

No, it still happens. I had Vista x64, latest drivers, latest openal, and the BSOD always occurred. I managed to get surround sound working with the system driver but for the life of me I can't remember what it is I did. I installed Win7 X64 and the BSOD situation is exactly the same. FYI I have a Xfi Titanium Fatality Pro. It always happens with the Xfi + vista/win7 X64. This is a major issue.

You name it, it is NOT SOLVED. Thanks for your attention...

Having ALchemy installed or not makes no difference, it BSODs either way. Also, having dsound.dll and dsound.ini in the System directory makes no difference either way also, though it creates a dsoundlog.txt with this entry:

Loaded c:\games\steam\steamapps\common\killingfloor\System\DSOUND.ini

Which would lead me to believe it is using ALchemy in some way. I was under the impression that ALchemy was for directsound to OpenAL conversion only, and this game is OpenAL to begin with.

Here is a log of a crash. This is with System Driver unchecked, and H\W 3D Sound selected, and ALchemy installed. It BSOD'd within about 10 seconds of entering a game.

Having recently upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit, I experienced this issue with ROOST and DH. Anytime something happens with a Creative product and/or their drivers it means nothing but grief. I eventually got it to work by following this I found on the Creative Forums (courtesy of DeeBee) with a couple of things else to do listed afterwards. I assume it will work with KF as well for me, but haven't actually tried it.

I have the X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro

-----------------------
From those forums:

For all of you with the problem with x64 vista or windows 7 -> creative x-fi -> system driver uncheck-> bsod

Go to the http://support.creative.com and find your x-fi card.

Install the latest drivers for your card. Make sure you get the "Creative Software AutoUpdate"-program with the driver package.

Then download the "Product identification module update". This fixes the "Creative Software AutoUpdate" so that it will recognize your x-fi card.

Now use "Creative Software AutoUpdate" program (start menu) to update your drivers and ESPECIALLY install Creative Alchemy.

Reboot

Start "Creative Software AutoUpdate" again and update the just installed Creative alchemy to version 1.41.02. *Note* it doesn't seem to work with previous versions.

Reboot

Open Creative alchemy and push the "add" button. Game title= Red Orchestra. Check game path and put your "red orchestra\system" folders path there. example "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\red orchestra\System"

REMEMBER to move red orchestra to the "Alchemy enabled" side of the program.

Now start Red Orchestra and enjoy surround sound even with system driver ticked.

-----------------------

I must use it with System Driver "ticked" otherwise I will still get a BSOD after 5-15 minutes. I am set using HD/3D with EAX, but it seems to work with those other choices as well.

I had a problem with the Creative Console Launcher, it was crashing the Console when I closed it and defaulting back to 2.1 Surround Sound. I had to set the compatability setting for that program to the latest Vista setting. Before doing this, I was only getting 2.1 Surround Sound in the game and it would crash the computer after so many minutes with or without the system driver ticked. Also, it sounded just terrible until it crashed. Not sure how this may or may not be related.

I am using the latest set of drivers from Creative for Windows 7 64bit.

If there is much of a difference in sound quality because I have system driver ticked, I don't really notice.

Previous to doing any of this, ROOST would crash with or without the system driver ticked. I know, doesn't seem to make sense.

------------------

I don't know if this will help anyone, maybe I just got lucky, but for now I seem to have things working.

Wow this is bull****. I can't believe I paid money for this game. I bought my $180 soundcard and $400 speakers so I could use 5.1 sound while playing video games. This sucks, Killing Floor is going to be uninstalled, and I actually thought the game was alright.

If you would have taken time to read some posts, you should be flaming at Creative...

I've contacted Creative Support, and after several email exchange with troubleshooting sugestions that obviously doesn't fix the issue, this was their response:

Paul,

I have escalated this to our developers / testers to look at this.

We will let you know the results of their tests when we are informed.

I have passed them a link to the killing floor MOD of UT2004 but there is no DEMO of Red Orchestra so I am not sure if that can be tested.

Please remember the more information you provide, including previous correspondence in your mail, helps in troubleshooting and solving the problem you are experiencing.

Thank You

Tripwire could contact Creative and help them fixing this issue, providing them full versions of Killing Floor and Red Orchestra Ostfront

I've seen your post on the Creative boards and wanted to link it here, but good to see you already did it yourself. I really hope TWI and Creative finally can fix this long standing problem the proper way (driver update) and not some hack that relies on Alchemy (This clearly is the fault of Creative, I'm not blaiming TWI).

So please Tripwire, give them a key for RO1 and for KF to work with.
