I would like my Stalingrad to go with a side of heroes, sounds awkward and unbelievable yet it is so close. This article came to my attention a few days ago http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3695http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3695 basically the author got to see UE3 run on a third gen itouch even play a bit to, as it stands right now it is just you running around and shooting on enemy that continually re spawns, but hey baby steps right?
There are limitations to having it on a idevice first and foremost
it is only capable of running on the newest (3rd gen) models due to OpenGl (covered in the article). Second being controls which are close to being perfected by games like ELIMINATE, Modern combat: sandstorm, NOVA, and Call of Duty world at war: Zombies (this is the best for controls as it offers 3 options). Yet are found lacking by most. Thirdly the fact that the all of the FPS's listed above can only have 4 people in the same game COD offers 4 player survival and connectivity issues while modern combat offers team death match although i have yet to play that as my airport does not support UPNP:rolleyes:
I don't expect to play Gears of War or ROHOS anytime soon but this is pretty cool.
Here is the video

once again the article http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3695http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3695

So Unreal Engine 3.0 now also supports the portable subsets of OpenGL ES 2.0...
When will it support regular OpenGL? The real Mac and *nix/BSD users are still waiting!

Also, hopefully Unreal Engine 3.0 will make it to Android (if it is possible with Dalvik Java VM) and Windows Mobile aswell. The iPhone hype won't last much longer, as the phone market is too diverse.
It's the same for the iPod Touch and the PMP market.

from an IRC comment, and it wasn't by me.. I'm not that witty..

"Epic shows off increasingly irrelevant technology running on gadget too small to be fun"

And I have to agree, I don't see a traditional FPS going onto a mobile dev for the same reason people seem to perfer them on the PC over consoles. That said, there are a ton of other applications for putting UE on a mobile device as UE is really just a content/engine framework, and it gives a growing body of UE-knowledgable persons even more additional platforms of which they can develop... and that's good.

But it doesn't necessarily have to be a shooter. Unreal Engine has been used for all sort of genres.

Maybe portable devices will get better human input interfaces over the next few years. Devices like the Odroid using old-fashioned D-pads (doesn't compete with analog nubs though) could also pave the way for mobile gaming.
