Killing Floor restarts my router

I know it sounds pretty weird, but I swear. Almost every time I join a new server or start up the game my router resets.

The router I got is the Steam wide loved Speed Touch 780. If I'm correct this one is also know as BT Hub aka "The Router That DCs You After 30 Seconds".

So, does anyone have any idea how do handle this other than beating my ISP to a bloody pulp with this useless piece of plastic? Sadly, plugging the internet cable directly into my PC is not an option.

Also, any updates on how to resolve the 30 second disconnect issue? Strangely enough I have to connect to a server *three* times, not two. The second time, it just stucks at "connecting to server" forever, I need to reconnect once more to get it fixed.

Hi

I have the exact same router as you, and can confirm the exact same problem aswell.

With the THOMSON Speed Touch ST780:
- Connecting to servers always lags me out after about 30sec, making me have to write reconnect x2 in the console (symptoms ingame is people and mobs running into walls)
- About 50% of the time when i refresh the serverlist, my router resets, and after a minute it comes back up and the serverlist is ok

Anyone else got this problem, and know of a fix?
If not, I'm gonna get myself another router.

If you have telnet access to the router you can login to it and delete the rule that is causing problems. Obviously only do this if you feel confident doing so. Also note that some routers have had telnet locked out, usually by ISPs.

Taken from the Steam FAQ at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1452-HCVB-6984 and amended slightly.

  1. Click on "Start", then select "Run", or if run is not present type it into the search box, type "cmd" and press Enter or click "Ok". This will bring up a command prompt.
  2. Type "telnet speedtouch", or if that doesn't work then type "telnet 192.168.1.254". * **
  3. You will be prompted to login to the modem with a username/password. The default is one of the following: Username: Administrator
Password: None (leave this field blank)
    OR:
    Username: admin
    Password: admin
If neither of those combinations work, please contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance.
  4. Once you have logged in, you will be presented with the command line of your modem. This is where you must enter the following commands:
    • Type connection bindlist and press enter. This will list connection bindings.
    • Look for a line that contains "GAME" and some port numbers. For example: GAME(UDP) udp 27010-27011
    • Enter the command :connection unbind application=GAME(UDP) port=27010-27011 and press enter. The port numbers in this command must match the numbers that are listed in your GAME port listing, similar to the example above.
  5. Try joining a KF game and see if that fixes things. You will have to issue the command saveall to save the changes.
* Note that if the IP address of your router is different then this won't work. To find out what your router's IP address is, open up a command prompt (type cmd into the search or run box as before) and type ipconfig. This should show your currently connected network connection - the router's address should be under "default gateway". If you can't see this, try "ipconfig /all" without quotes. This will bring up all network adapters so you will have more to look through, but you should be able to find it.

** If you do not have telnet installed and get an error message (it isn't installed on Vista and 7 as default), you can either install it through the programs and features -> turn windows features on or off section, or you can use Putty - http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html . Run it, and in the IP address type the router's IP address and select the telnet box, then click open.

I'm not sure if this will cure the router restarting, but after I did this to my test HomeHub it worked fine and didn't reboot at all.

Woulfe posted a video tutorial that covers it here:

Im using Windows 7 and the command window doesnt recongnize the telnet command. Any ideas?

(Also, not surprisingly, Red Orchestra restarts my router aswell)

Telnet is disabled by default in Windows 7 because it's a huge security hole ( no encryption at all ) compared to something like ssh.

To enable it, you can follow the instructions on this website: Link. You probably need elevated status for that, but I know it works because I enabled it on my laptop.

I can confirm that this worked on the Thomson Speedtouch ST780 router. After this was done, I don't have 30sec disconnects anymore, and the router never reboots by itself when browsing internet games.

Thanks mate!
