While I think you're right in part -- some people might be turned away from the game -- I don't think it would result in a negative word-of-mouth kind of thing. In-game ads don't really strike me as classy...at all...but at least TWI made their's as tasteful and reserved as possible. However, my biggest fear is that a non-trivial number of new players from this free weekend (or anytime in the future really) will see this and be immediately turned off from buying KF. Or worse, this news will spread across the internet and people won't even bother to check out KF because they read on some other website or heard from a friend that KF has in-game advertising and they'll imagine it's much worse than it really is.
So, movie trailers in the lobby courtesy of Massive, Inc. Any Tripwire folk want to re-assure us of the intent here? (Beside the intent of making some cash from imbedded advertising)
What's funny too is that, anyone who uses Facebook, or visits sites like CNN.com, Amazon, Newegg, Hotmail...these sites are already collecting this information and making use of the exact same kinds of ads.
TWI, i think its safe to say that we all, as a community of KF players, want to see hot chicks showing their goods during these advertisements. if you can make this very tasty you will be making me very happy because this is what KF is missing.
i prefer eastern european women, just in case.
to find a good, non-obtrusive way to insert non-annoying advertising into the game.
There is less choice about the in-game advertising

"Hey guys, check out this game, there's paid DLC packs and in-game advertising, but other than that it's cheap!"
Video adverts with sound are non-obtrusive? I guess it could be worse, it could pop up and get in the way of the perk buttons you're trying to click, but "could be worse" isn't "good".
Less? Not zero? So circumventing the ads is not a bannable offense? Or will you consider a City of Heroes type ad model, where players can choose to enable or disable ads, knowing that if they enable the ads the company gets more money?
You believe this? If the ads were going to remain Tripwire related, they wouldn't be hooking up with a notorious 3rd party advertising company. How long before the ads are like all the other Massive ads and we're seeing Fanta commercials before we can play? Sure, you might like RO getting more attention, but will you feel the same way about sneakers or punch the monkey or whatever? I'm sure Tripwire/Massive wants to assure us they will monitor the content, just like AO and Planetside. Because things turned out so well over there...
Yeah, it's going to scare off some newbies. It's never a good sign when a paid program switches to an advertising supported model. Instead of "Hey guys, check out this great game, and it's cheap!" it's "Hey guys, check out this game, there's paid DLC packs and in-game advertising, but other than that it's cheap!"
