Left 4 Dead

I love it! Only thing is it seems like no one I've played with understands the concepts of not shooting your teammates...Got my pre-order in through Steam, and look forward to playing it on the 18th

We (three guys I played the demo through last night) had only that problem if someone accidently ran into line of fire or if there were alot of infected around. Sometimes the latter caused quite hilarious situations :p

Played the demo for the first time yesterday and Im already hooked. The points you get attacked at are varying enough to keep the linear levels interesting and the co-op gameplay is excellent already (if peeps have mics).

The tank and witch are fooking hard at times. The other bosses on (normal/advanced) seem to be fairly easy pickings. Boomer one shot kill, smoker much the same and the hunter is harder to hit but still easy to finish off.

The tank killed me twice yesterday as he pins you into a corner and your ****ed and the witch just floors you in an insta kill (knock down).

My impressions of the demo are mostly good. For a game on the source engine it looks very good, cant wait to see more good looking levels. The game itself is a little too easy with 4 people, but once in a while the game throws all it's got at you and it's a lot of fun. When there are actual people playing the infected I'm sure it will be a lot harder. The best part of the game for me is the animation, everything is just so seamless it adds a ton of immersion, even when idle zombies fight amongst each other, puke all over the place etc.

The only thing that I didn't like is how zombies are spawned on top of objects and in various odd places. Also it would make more sense to be able to choose from more then 4 characters. Only in a perfect world 1/4 of gamers are girls. But then again if it was 4 male survivors what would be the point; you would never be able to repopulate civilization if you do survive.

Didn't you know, 1/4 of the population is old, 1/4 black, 1/4 ugly and 1/4 female :p

I'd like to see a few more characters, just for variety.
It is a lot of fun, couple of things I pick at but lots of fun means I forgive them.
I'm bored of the demo levels already after 3 or so run throughs, they are incredibly easy, expert mode really isnt a challenge either.
I'm sure the game itself will get more difficult.

Looks great, even on my old system. Animations are great too.

A good way to take out the tank, I've noticed, is to fall back to the long train carriage, if possible. The tank has difficulty moving around in the train (although he can get in), and will often jump on top of it. Your entire vision will rumble then. Keeping your distance is key (same goes for the boomer by the way).

Yeah, friendly fire is quite a problem. Either people run into your line of fire, or they get too trigger-happy while you're in front of them. You just have to trust your teammates. If a horde is coming your way and you can't shoot the horde without shooting the teammates in front of you, simply don't shoot... your teammates will take care of them. But I do like the friendly fire, it adds challenge.

Another effective way to stop a horde (if you're in the train cart) is to crouch on the bench, have a teammate do the same on the opposite bench, and one teammate in the middle. That way three people can stop a horde.

I'd like to see a few more characters, just for variety.

That would go against the whole idea of it. Just four characters is great, it results in more depth. The player is much more likely to "bond" with four well-made characters than with 10 mediocre characters.

You could say that I suppose. But I doubt the level of depth that requires a small number of fixed characters will be present itself in the game. Running and gunning from point to point doesn't require character interaction.
Coming to think of it, do you think the 4 characters they have at the moment are well characterised? Stereotypical and generic black guy, grizzled old guy, tough guy, and spunky brunette?
I'm sure they could have put a few more character options in and still maintained the same level of depth.

edit:lol @ BuddyLee

Yes, I do. Valve does that really well. I like the characters. Maybe some of the characters are stereotypes, but they're still cool. Louis for example, it looks like he just escaped out of his office. Or Zoey, a normal college student... finally a female character that doesn't look like a porn star. The survivors are in it together and their voice acting is really good; the audio feedback you get from them sets the mood and depends on the situation.

It wouldn't work for cutscenes either... just look at the intro movie; do you think that would work with 10 characters in it? You would get the 4 characters and the rest would just be 6 nameless faces in the background. You have to understand that L4D tries to tell a story. The campaign you partly play in the demo ("No Mercy") is part of that story.

Besides, it's called Left 4 Dead for a reason :)

Well, I disagree. I'm not saying the characters are necessarily bad, but they're not fantastic. They do the job more than adequately. It's actually the lack of characterization that makes them acceptable.

I'll have to admit I think that 90% of all game characters ever are absolutely crap, which makes the fact that Valve has come up with four perfectly acceptable ones all the more remarkable.

However, I don't really see why you can't allow people to choose which 4 characters to play as. There'd still be four people playing.

There's no point arguing the point now, but the intro cutscene could be rendered in-game, at the start of the game depending on the characters people had chosen. Rather than being a pre-rendered cinematic.

Anyway, we digress a little too far on this tangent :)

They way I'd do it (I know before I mentioned about going off on a tangent, and here we go again), you'd have predefined characters (say 10 in total), doesn't matter how diverse or what the ratio is. Then a selection of voices to choose from.

Whilst we're off on a tangent, the director has immense potential to be used to make an excellent Aliens game. Or any other "OMFG THERE COMING OUT OF THE GOD DAMN WALLS" scenarios.
